Read on for our exclusive interview with Triple Charm below:
How did your musical journeys begin? What initially inspired you to work together?
We all grew up doing competitive dance, so music has always been a big part of our lives! Our first time performing together was actually when we were around 6, 5, and 2 years old. We danced as a trio to “We are Family” from Alvin and the Chipmunks. We didn’t realize it then, but that kick-started our journey into becoming Triple Charm.
In 2019, we officially formed our band. We formed Triple Charm to compete at the World Championships of Performing Arts, which is a competition with over 62 countries competing in various performing arts categories. Through the process of preparing for that competition, we really fell in love with singing and performing together. Since then, we’ve felt like this is what we are meant to do!
Who are some of your musical influences? Is there anyone who inspires you when it comes time to create music?
We have many different musical influences! For us, where we draw inspiration from changes depending on the genre of music or vibe we are going for. Lately, we have been very inspired by iconic 90s pop, like the Spice Girls and Britney Spears. When it comes to Latin music, we get a lot of inspiration from artists like Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony, Shakira, and Camilla Cabello.
Is there anyone you would love to work with or collaborate with someday?
We would love to work with Meghan Trainor one day! She is an amazing songwriter and spreads positivity through her music, which is something we love and aim to do. She also started writing music at a young age and we feel like there is so much we could learn from her!
How has that experience been working together as sisters and coworkers?
Working with your sisters is so much fun and comes in handy! When you want to song write or plan out videos, all you have to do is walk a couple feet into your sister’s room. It’s also so amazing being able to share this journey with each other, from writing our first song together, to being recognized in public for the first time. We wouldn’t want it any other way!
Would you say you each have a different strength that you like to focus on or different interests when it comes to creating music together?
Amalia: That is such a good question! We definitely each have our own strengths when it comes to songwriting. I took a music production class at Berklee College of Music, so when it comes to the track, and arrangement I play a big role.
Raena also took an online class at Berklee College of Music, for lyrics and songwriting. She is great with words, and has cool perspectives, so she is a major part of the lyric writing. Gabriella is very creative and thinks outside of the box! So, when it comes to melody writing, she always comes up with cool ideas that you never would have thought of but once you hear them, they’ll be stuck in your head.
You’ve had great success with social media and Instagram Reels specifically. What do you enjoy most about connecting with your fans in that way? What inspired you to create that kind of content?
Thank you! Creating content is so much fun and it has been an amazing way to connect with our audience. Our goal since we first started has always been to spread positivity which we thought was only possible through our music and performing. Then when covid started, and we had a lot of extra time on our hands, it opened us up to a whole new world of content creation!
We started making content on social media in 2020 and have been building and connecting with our audience ever since. Now we are able to spread positivity every day. Whether that’s putting a smile on someone’s face with one of our videos or replying to their comments.
A common theme in your music and videos seems to be empowering young women. Can you talk a little about why that message is so important to share?
Absolutely. Female empowerment is something we really believe in and is so important to us. There are so many amazing, hard-working women in our lives that we really look up to. Seeing how hard they have worked to get to where they are today has inspired us in every way. We’ve taken what we’ve learned from them and hope to empower and encourage other young women in the same way; To go after your dreams, never give up and make your voice heard.
What can your fans expect from your latest single “Don’t Need A Reason”? How would you say it compares to your previous singles?
Our latest single “Don’t Need a Reason” is different from anything we’ve ever released before! It is our first ever bilingual single, which we wrote to really connect with our Hispanic roots. We are 50% Puerto Rican and wanted to celebrate that part of us with this Latin-inspired single. This song is all about the power of dance and we hope it gets you up on your feet!
How would you describe your sound to someone thinking of listening for the first time?
The best way to describe our sound would be pop, positive, upbeat, and danceable. With every song we write, the main thing we are after is spreading a positive message. We want to leave our listeners feeling better than they did before hearing our song.
Also, dance is a major part of our lives, so danceability is something we try to incorporate into our music. Right now, we are still experimenting with our sound. Pop music is the main genre we stick to, but we are dipping our toe into different subgenres to see what we and our audience really gravitate to.
What’s next for you? What can your fans look forward to from you next?
We are so excited for what the future holds and can’t wait to take you all along the journey! Right now, we are super focused on writing new music and creating lots of new content for our social media. We have gotten a lot of requests for more long-form YouTube videos from our fans, so definitely be on the lookout for that!
Thank you so much to the girls of Triple Charm for taking the time to speak with us!
