Gaten Matarazzo joins the cast as Jared Kleinman in this last leg before the show closes in September. Perhaps most recognized for his portrayal of Dustin Henderson on the mega-hit Netflix series Stranger Things, Gaten tackles a role perfectly suited for his strengths.
Step Into The Sun
The character of Jared is the perfect blend of comedic relief with calculated timing. Stepping into Jared’s shoes, Gaten is able to shine effortlessly on stage. I have seen six different casts of Dear Evan Hansen and have appreciated every difference an actor has brought to the role, no matter how seemingly small or insignificant. Those mannerisms and heartfelt choices really make or break a character and the experience for the audience.
Gaten’s performance is almost an effortless ordeal, combining a confidence and certainty from the moment he steps on stage. While Jared could be dismissed as a side character meant only for comedic relief, Gaten’s performance shows that everything he brings to the table elevates this personality to so much more. And it just works.

Those who have followed Gaten’s career know that this isn’t his first time on a Broadway stage. I was personally very excited to see the young actor in a role that showcased not only the witty side of him that we already know and love, but his vocal range as well. Let us remind you that Gaten Matarazzo has a terrific voice and our seats were so close we could fully appreciate his power and tone.
You Will Be Found
Few Broadway musicals have stuck with me and resonated as deeply as Dear Evan Hansen. The emotional story that follows a young boy with extreme anxiety has been a light in the darkness for many of us. While still emotionally taxing, it’s wonderful to see the production allow the cast members to truly make it their own every night.
Every element that the cast brings to this performance is truly a wonderful addition and something to behold. There is a balance and nuance to Dear Evan Hansen that is oftentimes overlooked. Dear Evan Hansen is a truly captivating experience on Broadway that continues to be beautiful, haunting, and an outlet for so many. It is so special to be able to see part of yourself in this performance. Dear Evan Hansen is a production that will have a place in our hearts for forever.
