Fans of CBC’s The Romeo Section will recognize Brandi Alexander as a new face from season 2, which premiered earlier this month. We chatted with her about playing two different Lanas (on The Romeo Section and in the film The Orchard) and more! Read on for our interview with actress Brandi Alexander.
So viewers of The Romeo Section have already seen Lana go through a lot. What can we expect from her story line as the season continues? Is she able to hold her own in the cutthroat world of dealing heroin?
Brandi Alexander: As the season continues, you’ll find Lana trying to deal with the complicated situations that arise in the best way she can.
Lana seems like a tough cookie who’s resilient and adaptable in the face of whatever life throws at her. What initially attracted you to the role, and what do you like best about playing Lana?
What attracted me to this particular role was that Lana is tough and can cope with what cards are being dealt to her. She’s wise beyond her years. Although she has this tough exterior, she is a good person. I like how Lana is not a pushover and follows what she believes in.
At first glance, you and Lana seem like complete opposites. She oversees the business side of selling a product that literally kills people, whereas you’re a registered holistic nutritionist! Are there any similarities between you and your character? Is it fun to play someone with such a different lifestyle to yours?
We are similar on a basic human level, in the sense that when our natural instincts kick in, we will do whatever it takes to survive. I am not in Lana’s situation, however it is very interesting to tell her story. It’s important to show as broad a spectrum as possible in regards to the human experience.
You joined The Romeo Section at the beginning of season 2. Did you have any new-kid-in-school jitters on the first day? How did the cast members returning for their sophomore season make you feel welcome?
I’d be lying if i said I didn’t have the jitters, because of course I did! The returning cast members were so welcoming, though. We meshed instantly. It was like going to summer camp and making all new friends. No egos – everyone was super cool. You can say we’re like a family.
In addition to your recurring role on The Romeo Section, you also recently wrapped your work on The Orchard. Can you tell us a bit about the film and your role in it?
The Orchard is about Los Angeles talent agent Max Roth, who is played by Matt Angel. He inherits an orchard in [British Columbia’s Okanagan region] and goes through some personal struggles along the way. I play Lana (yes, another Lana!), who is Max’s girlfriend.
Lastly, you describe yourself as a foodie who loves to travel. What’s your favorite vacation destination? If you could only eat one type of cuisine for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
My favorite destination so far has been Cuba. The culture, the history, and the people were just so beautiful to experience. Not to mention the beaches have been my favorite so far. As for cuisine, that would have to be Italian. I could eat pasta every single day of my life, for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
