Following the news last night that ABC Family has renewed Switched at Birth for a fifth season, we caught up with series star D.W. Moffett to share in his excitement for the renewal. We talk about the upcoming fall finale next week, ABC Family’s transition into Freeform, and his hopes for the show moving forward into the new season.
Read on for our exclusive new interview with D.W. Moffett below:
Congratulations on ‘Switched at Birth’ getting renewed for season 5! How did you react when you got the news?
Was jumping up and down when I got the texts. I am shadowing on another TV show to direct and looked at my phone and I had 32 messages. I knew it had to be something good!
In your opinion, why should the show continue to be a fixture on the network as it makes that transition into Freeform?
This show could be on for another 10 years with all the great stories Lizzy has to tell. And the great cast she has to work with! But then again, I’m biased!
What kind of a fallout can we expect in the Fall finale now that John has discovered what Regina has been hiding?
Well…Regina is always on a short leash with Josh…He won’t like it!
What else can you tease about the finale and what viewers can look forward to?
Mucho heart. Mucho!
This has been a tense season for John and Kathryn and their financial situation. Has that story played itself out or will the effects still be felt in the Kennish household?
I think financial stress is something that is universal in our country and not really addressed in most media. Maybe they think it’s too boring. I don’t know. I just think Lizzy (Weiss) really touched on something incredibly true to our time in this culture (Just like she always does) and I was really pleased to see it written so well.
What are your hopes for the new season and the Kennish family moving forward, should the show return?
I hope that we get to continue to address groundbreaking topics. I’m sure we will!
Switched at Birth 4×20 “And Always Searching for Beauty” airs Monday on ABC Family:
Bay is thrilled by the opportunity to showcase her newest work in her first art show. Daphne interviews for an internship abroad that would bring her closer to Quinn, causing friction with Mingo. Kathryn’s frustrations with John come to a head when he storms out of a deal negotiation. Meanwhile, John and Kathryn confront Regina over Eric’s secret.
Thank you once again to D.W. Moffett for taking the time to chat with us. We really appreciate it.
