Today, we’re taking a listen to Direct Divide, a rock trio out of Seattle, Washington. The group, who is described as “violin amplified rock”, just released their EP Bridges. They blend the impressive sound of the violin with the classic elements of a good rock band. Beginning this September, the rock trio has embarked on a 33 date tour around the US in support of their new single “Abduction”.
Upon my first listen of “Abduction”, I am immediately reminded of Lindsey Stirling. This is not at all a bad thing as Lindsey’s violin performances are extraordinary. I would describe Direct Divide as a Lindsey Stirling/Early Evanescence hybrid. Inspired by bands like Muse and A Perfect Circle, the added soft elements of piano instrumentals enforce my comparison but help to make a very pleasant listening experience that I’m excited to continue.
“Abduction” features Razz on lead vocals — vocals that are gritty and powerful and seem perfectly suited for this genre. Kevin Proctor and Valdemar Huguet join her on guitar, drums, and keyboards to complete the emotion and attitude of their songs.
Live performance of “Abduction” below:
While I am really loving the studio version of this song, I actually found myself wishing for more of the violin. The violin and rock combination is one that I’ve grown to love over the years and a kick ass solo wouldn’t hurt.
However, their energy and presence together is a good one and it’s a lot more enjoyable than some of the stuff I’m forced to listen to on a daily basis. If this kind of music is your thing, and let’s face it, it should be, you should definitely consider giving them a listen.
