This episode of Once Upon a Time is a lot more Charming than usual. If Prince Charming isn’t your favorite character, then this episode probably isn’t for you. Personally, Josh Dallas is lookin’ pretty good lately so I’m not hating it.
Read on for our recap for “The Tower“:
In present day Storybrooke, Zelena (Rebecca Mader) is still wreaking havoc undetected. After finding out last week that she’s been keeping Rumple (Robert Carlyle) in a cage like her own twisted straw-spinning pet, everyone wondered what the heck she was up to. Besides shaving him, it seems she needs him for something. She’s using his old dagger to control him. How she got control of him and the dagger remains a mystery.
What exactly is her game? Why is she breaking into Rumple’s safe? Her target this week is poor old Charming (Josh Dallas), who has enough on his plate. She slips something from the safe into his tea. David is worrying that he won’t be a good father after losing Emma (Jennifer Morrison) twice. He never got the chance to raise her. This is a fear that he had back in Fairy Tale Land 2.0 upon finding out that Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) is pregnant with her second child.
After being overcome with fear and dread, he takes the advice of Robin Hood (Sean Maguire) to set out into the forest to look for Nightroot. It is said to eliminate one’s fear. During his quest, he hears a cry for help coming from a room in a tall tower. He climbs his way in and, you guessed it, Rapunzel (guest star Alexandra Metz) is waiting for him. Rescuing her is not going to be so easy. A creepy, cloaked figure begins to attack them and it’s really scary! I feel like I’m watching “The Ring” or something.
The cloaked figure is like a Dementor, only scarier, and with the knowledge of how to fight. Not only is it like a Dementor, but it’s also kind of like a Boggart. The writers must have read Harry Potter beforehand. Or maybe that’s just me. The figure takes on the appearance of yourself and forces you to face your fear. This same figure follows David in Storybrooke after he drinks the tainted tea.
After finding traces of berry in Regina’s office, Emma and Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) set off to search the woods for any signs of the Wicked Witch. They find her farm house and storm cellar but leave to find David and Regina (Lana Parilla) before searching anything. David is struggling and fighting the cloaked figure of himself in the forest. He summons up all of his courage to defeat the beast and is able to reunite with his friends. His sword, however, was taken. The Wicked Witch now has it in her possession. Did she steal his courage? What for?
When they attempt to go back to search the storm cellar, everything inside is empty. Rumple is gone. Did he escape? Was he let out? Does this mean Prince Charming is the Cowardly Lion? Who is going to be the Tin Man?
