What a week for pop music huh? Following a string of leaks that released to the world both Katy Perry‘s new single “Roar” and “Applause” by Lady Gaga, fans have been jamming at this new influx of music to digest and enjoy. Now, I have listened to both songs multiple times and was prepared to hate both of them. I’ve been a fan of Gaga since she was just starting to become famous so I’ve missed her old sound a lot. I didn’t care much for “Burqa” when it leaked and I just assumed her new music would contain the same level of pretentious nonsense as “Born This Way.” I think Gaga has a fantastic voice but when she deliberately sings in odd voices and gives deeper social meanings to her songs when it really isn’t necessary, it can get disappointing. I expected more of the same from “Applause.”
When the first snippet leaked and Gaga was pulling a weird accent singing about pop culture, I was already done. I didn’t like most of Born This Way and figured this would be the same thing all over again.
Then the second snippet leaked, previewing a bit of the chorus and I heard something. I could just tell from those 6 seconds that it was building up to be a, hopefully, amazing chorus.
And so I waited.
And then today, Applause leaked. Or Gaga leaked it herself. Either way, I ran to the first source I could find and played it.
I hated how the song started off. More weird accenty vocals and quite honestly, if it wasn’t for the lyric sheet, I wouldn’t understand a thing she’s saying in the whole song.
But then I got closer to the chorus. “I live for the applause, applause..” and it started. I am really loving this more than I thought I would. It’s fun, it’s catchy, it’s perfect for dancing, and giving me all the right flashbacks to the better music of the 80s and 90s. Similar to how “Edge of Glory” worked for me.
I think this was a great move and her fans will eat it up. It’s insanely catchy and I am digging the chorus. I think this song has the potential to be used everywhere to amp up fans at sporting events, concerts, etc.
I thought the same thing with Roar. That it would make a splash at the Winter Olympics as a theme song.
But it remains to be seen. Who will come out on top? And which song is better?
I had already crowned Katy the winner earlier this week after listening to Roar and hearing the Applause snippets. However, after listening to them both in their entirety, I have to give this round to Gaga.
What about you guys?
