Ethel instead, is diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. The doctor says that she’s got no more than a year to live.
Back at the camp, we learn that freak shows don’t run on Halloween. Ethel explains to the twins that it’s because of Edward Mordrake, an aristocrat who lived in the middle 1880s. He was a scolar, a poet. But, he had another face on the back of his head. It whispered to Edward incessantly about horrible things. Edward tried to kill that face many times. He went mad, and he was sent to a crazy house. One night he escaped the asylum, and he ended up working in a freak show, where he became the Two Faced Prince. One Halloween night though, he snapped, and murdered every freak in the troupe, and then he hung himself. The legend has it that, even in death, the demon face was smiling.
From that moment on, freaks don’t perform on Halloween, fearing that they would summon the spirit of Edward. And once he appears, he never leaves, until he brings a dead freak with him.
While Jimmy and friends bury Meep, a new character arrives at the Freak Show: she presents herself as Mystic Miss Esmeralda, a fortune teller. She talks with Elsa, telling her that she can see in her future she will meet a man who will make her a star. Elsa doesn’t need to hear more, and hires Esmeralda.
Dot tells Bette that she will find a doctor willing to separate them.
Ethel talks to Dell, telling him that Jimmy will never have to know Dell is his father. She also tells him she’s dying, and that Jimmy needs a guidance.
We learn that Esmeralda came to the freak show for another reason. She and a man interested in freaks want to kill the them, to display them.
During Halloween night, our dear Twisty the clown kidnaps a young man.
Elsa decides that the night of Halloween is a good time as any to start rehearsing a new performance. And while she’s singing, Edward Mordrake appears. He looks just like the man Esmeralda described would arrive soon to help her becoming a star… Right after the end of her performace, he disappears.
Edward appears to Ethel. He asks her to talk honestly to him, about her life. And she confesses an horrible thing happened to her. Dell made people pay to watch her delivering Jimmy, showing the freak baby to the crowd for a penny. She thinks Edward is going to kill her, but he suddenly disappears.
Dandy, dressed as a clown, goes to Twisty’s old bus to terrorize the poor girl and child who are kept inside. And Twisty arrives just in time, with another guest for their Halooween party…
