American Horror Story Season 4 Premiere, “Monsters Among Us”, takes us in Jupiter, Florida, in 1952.
A woman is found dead inside her house.
Inside, something else is found. At the city’s hospital, we meet Jessica Lange’s character, Fraulein Elsa Mars. She’s interested in what was found inside the house.
What she sees “are” conjoined twins. We learn that the two sisters are very different from one another: Bette, more open and eager to talk, Dot, the other twin, suspicious and introvert.
Next, two young lovers near a lake outside Jupiter. Suddenly, a very creepy clown, Twisty the Clown, appears while they’re having a romantic picnic. And he’s not there to entertain…
We learn that Elsa runs a “Freak Show” in Jupiter, and we meet another of her “monsters”, Jimmy.
Jimmy thinks the Show is over for them all. Elsa is convinced things are going to change soon.
The creepy clown kills other two people, and kidnaps a young boy. It looks like the twins’ mother was killed by the clown too.
The clown is keeping the young boy and the girl we saw at the beginning of the episode imprisoned inside an abandoned bus.
We learn that the conjoined twins killed their mother, who was keeping them segregated. Bette took the initiative, and Dot obviously couldn’t stop her.
Elsa tells them she can save them from the police, by taking them to her Freak Show.
Bette is happy about the development, while Dot is not. Elsa is sure that the twins are going to save her Freak Show, finally bringingsome public.
We meet the bearded woman, named Ethel, who is Elsa’s henchwoman. Ethel is extremely devoted to Elsa, because she saved her life. She is Jimmy’s mother.
When a detective finds Bett and Dot and tries to arrest them, Jimmy kills him. After he and his friends bury him.
Finally, the show is about to start under the tent of the Freak Show… with two people as public. A young man, Dandy, with his mother, who bought out all the tickets for the night.
The show is basically centrend on Elsa’s performance. After they see Bett and Dot, Dandy and his mother try to buy them, but Elsa refuses to give them away for any price, and Bett says that they are finally home.
Elsa later confesses to Ethel that all she really wants is for people to see and admire her, so that she can become the star she’s always wanted to be.
And, at the very end of the episode, we learn that Elsa has prosthetic legs.
Welcome to the freak show! This season of American Horror Story starts with a creepy clown, a German lady who’s trying her best to be the star, and a group of freaks, of monsters, as “normal” people call them.
But who is really the monster?
As Elsa says during the episode, “My monsters, the ones you call depraved, they are the beautiful, heroic ones. They offer their oddity to the world. They provide a laugh, or a fright, to people in need of entertainment. I’ll tell you who the monsters are! The people outside this tent!”
As for all the previous seasons of American Horror Story, I consider Jessica Lange to be the real, unique backbone of the Show. No matter the kind of character she has to play, Lange’s art never fails.
