A lot happened in The Fosters season 1, and if the first episode of season 2 is anything to go by, the trend seems set to continue. Read on for the rest of our recap of The Fosters 2×1, “Things Unknown”:
The Fosters 2×1 begins where the last season left off: Brandon, bruised and bloodied, manages to lift himself from the asphalt into his car. He presses down on the horn… and awakens in bed to the sound of his alarm blaring. Was it all a bad dream? The wrist brace on his hand suggests otherwise.
Downstairs, Jude gets an exciting piece of mail – his new birth certificate, which officially lists Stef and Lena as his parents. Speaking of the juvenile members of the Adams Foster clan and women who are old enough to be their mothers, the scene cuts to Dani talking with Brandon. She uses Brandon’s concern for his father to persuade him to keep quiet about their dalliance, and mentions that when Mike went AWOL after finding out Brandon bribed the twins’ birth mom, she found him extremely drunk and with blood on his hands. Later, Brandon mentions this to Stef, which makes Stef suspect that Mike had something to do with Ana‘s disappearance – a suspicion that’s confirmed when a witness to the altercation involving Ana recognizes a photo of Mike.
Brandon isn’t the only one having daddy drama; a judge rules that because Callie‘s birth father, Robert Quinn, never signed her birth certificate, it’s possible he didn’t know of her existence.
I know it’s frustrating, but until there is signed consent from Robert Quinn, the adoption of Callie Jacob by Stefanie and Lena Adams Foster is denied.
Time for another flashback. When Stef and Lena head to the hospital after Brandon’s beating, they learn that he suffered compound fractures in his hand and needs surgery. When Stef asks who attacked him, Brandon gives up Vico. (Later, we find out that Vico got off lightly for the crime; he receives two years’ probation and is being shipped off to military school.) Cut to Brandon having a check-up in the present day. The prognosis seems good, but it’s still unclear whether he’ll be able to play the piano like he used to.
Trouble in Paradise
The Adams Fosters sit down to a peaceful family dinner, bickering over Mariana‘s dyed blonde hair notwithstanding. (Via another flashback, we learn the reason behind Mariana’s choice to go blonde – when she gets picked for the dance team, she overhears speculation that she only made the cut because she’s Latina.) Stef and Lena comment on how rare it is for everyone to be together, and in TV land, this can mean only one thing: Something bad is about to happen. As if on cue, there’s a knock at the door. Stef and Lena’s license to foster has expired, and Callie needs to be, in the words of the social worker, “removed from the home.” When Jude packs a bag and tries to go with her, Callie tells him she’ll be back in plenty of time to see him read his essay at school the next day. Unfortunately, despite Stef spending hours at the courthouse the following day, that doesn’t happen.
Did we mention that Jesus and Emma are now officially together? It’s not all good news, though; Emma’s noticed a change in her wrestling teammates’ attitudes toward her.
Look, ever since you and I started dating, well… I went from being one of the guys to Jesus’ girlfriend. … I know it’s stupid, but I feel like I lost all my friends. And you know I don’t hang out with girls, and now that the guys are treating me like a girl, well… it just sucks.
When Jesus tries to quit the team, Emma objects, saying she can handle her own problems.
Finding an Anchor
After a run-in with the judge, Stef goes to pick up Callie from her new foster home. When Callie gets back, Jude reads his essay to the family.
It’s really cool that the symbol of our school is the anchor, because before I came here, I was always lost, always drifting from one home to another, one school to another, but now I have an anchor. When you’re out in the middle of the ocean, you can be washed overboard and lost at sea. Once you’ve found your way into a harbor and dropped your anchor, you’re safe.
It could be said that for Brandon, his anchor is playing piano. He admits to Mike that he’s not sure who he is without it. After he tries and fails to play a familiar song, he breaks down in tears.
Being removed from Stef and Lena’s care and listening to Jude’s essay prompts Callie to decide that she needs an anchor of her own. Although she was initially opposed to the idea of finding her birth father, she doesn’t want Social Services to pull her away from the Adams Foster household again. Before the end of the episode, Robert Quinn is located, served with abandonment papers… and shows up at the burger stand where Callie and Daphne work, with a teenage girl who looks an awful lot like Callie.
