Daniel DiMaggio stars as Oliver Otto on the hilarious comedy series American Housewife. Starring alongside Katy Mixon and Diedrich Bader in the hit ABC sitcom, Daniel is a breakout star delivering laughs to viewers week after week.
Just ahead of the season 3 finale airing on Tuesday, May 21st, we had the chance to speak with Daniel about what attracted him to his role on the show, what he loves most about comedy, and how it’s been working with the cast.
Read on for our exclusive interview with Daniel DiMaggio below:
What motivated you to initially pursue acting as your career? Was there anyone who influenced or inspired you?
I guess because my parents are both actors and do other things in the business I was around and influenced by that. The first I ever did was play a baby because my mom got a part and she brought me with her.
Can you tell us about your character Oliver on American Housewife and what originally attracted you to the role?
Oliver is ambitious and he’s smart and sarcastic. I like to think I’m those things but hopefully not as intense the way he is. We’ve seen Oliver’s softer side too so I think he’s more of a real character now.
What do you enjoy most about performing comedic scenes? Would you say that you prefer it over more dramatic roles?
For me comedy is what I’m used to because that’s mostly what I’ve done. I have done some drama and I really like doing that too. But comedy is different because of timing. Everyone has to work to together to make jokes work. It’s great when it works.
Do you do anything special to prepare for the role of Oliver? Would you say you are similar to your character at all?
We have a lot in common. For me he’s easy to understand which makes him easy to play for me. He loves money, the finer things. I get that but there’s so much more in life and I think that’s what he’s learning.

American Housewife features a fantastic group of actors and actresses. How has the experience been working alongside the cast?
Obviously, it’s been a great learning experience especially working with Katy and Diedrich who’ve done so much television and movies. I’ve been lucky to have my first major job with veterans like that. Meg is closest in age to me so we have fun. Meg, Julia and I have literally grown up on a show with a great cast and especially great writing which makes us all look good.
I love watching American Housewife all at once and it’s a great way to escape into the world of sitcoms and comedy. What are some of your favorite series to binge-watch on a night in?
I like The Office a lot and have recently been watching the whole series. Arrested Development and some dramas too like The Bodyguard. Also, I’ve been watching Barry which is really great.
Is there anyone you would love to work with someday, if given the chance?
I’d like to do movies and work with the best directors and actors. There are too many to name but given a choice, Donald Glover comes to mind. He’s so versatile.
What else are you working on? What can your fans look forward to from you next?
As of right now we’re waiting to hear if there’s a Season 4 of American Housewife. I’m busy with school and looking forward to some time off this summer.
