The fall portion of Switched at Birth season 4 kicked off this week with Switched at Birth 4×11. Here are five things we learned during the episode:
1. Lily’s pregnant.
Unless you somehow escaped all the pre-episode buzz, the news that someone’s pregnant shouldn’t come as a surprise, but the fact that it’s Lily – Toby’s ex-girlfriend – was a mystery until Switched at Birth 4×11 aired. Lily’s freaking out, Toby isn’t speaking to her… and to make matters worse, at the end of the episode, she finds out the baby has Down syndrome.
2. Bay’s struggling to heal.
Having Emmett hallucinations everywhere she goes isn’t great, but at least Bay has Travis. They say a problem shared is a problem halved, and the fact that Travis recently parted ways with Mary Beth means he can truly empathize. At first, Bay blames other people for the breakup, but Melody helps her realize she and Emmett were already growing apart.
“It’s both of [our] faults, and it’s no one’s fault.”
3. Daphne likes Mingo… but her friends don’t.
Travis and Iris are both less than thrilled that Daphne’s spending time with Mingo. Their reservations drive a wedge between the couple and make Daphne doubt Mingo’s motives, but he reassures her that she has nothing to worry about.
4. Daphne and Travis are #TeamBay.
Travis wants to stay friends with both Bay and Emmett after what he terms “the divorce,” but he tells Bay he thinks Emmett’s an idiot. Meanwhile, the future for Daphne and Emmett is less certain, even though they’ve been in each other’s lives since they were 8 years old.
“I don’t care how long we’ve been friends. On this, I stand with [Bay].”
5. Eric (a.k.a. Marcus) has a criminal background.
And we’re not talking about speeding tickets here. Eric’s wanted for kidnapping his son – but there’s more to the story. He claims he actually rescued Will (a.k.a. Keon) from an addict mother and her abusive boyfriend, and begs Regina not to turn him in. By the end of Switched at Birth 4×11, Regina agrees, drawing upon her own experience of keeping the switch a secret when Daphne and Bay were kids.
Bonus quote from Switched at Birth 4×11:
Melody: You know how guys are. They pull back. They compartmentalize.
Bay: And we fall apart.
Melody: No, we do the hard work of moving through our emotions so we don’t fall apart later.
