Read on for our exclusive interview with Jordan Fisher below:
Teen Beach 2 is one of the most highly anticipated movies for Disney this year. What can you tease about what we can expect from the new movie? And then, more specifically, what your character will be up to?
The story picks up three months after the first movie ends. The cast of Wet Side Story washes up on shore… but how that happens is where everything starts to take place. Mack and Brady are about to start their senior year and there’s a little drama where that’s concerned with their relationship. Lela feels like she needs to venture out and find herself. She feels kind of stifled and she’s not really saying what she really believes in her heart of hearts. That’s what leads her to Mack and Brady’s world. We all follow suit to try and grab her and bring her back to Wet Side Story so we don’t all evaporate!
Seacat tries to be as cool as a cucumber through anything. Tries to always have an answer. He tries to figure out how to lead the way he wants to. Between everybody, thankfully in the cast of West Side Story, they’re all big fans of brothers and sisters figuring out how to keep their story moving along– so they can continue living their life in this movie which is all they really know.
Jordan Fisher and Cast of Teen Beach 2
Where the music and choreography is concerned I think it’s just 100 times better than the first one. Not to say that the first one was bad at all, we all loved it and it ended up being much bigger than anyone could have ever dreamed of it being. It’s exciting to see people be excited about seeing Teen Beach 2. We’ve worked so hard on it for awhile. There was a month of just rehearsals and conditioning and cardio before we even set foot on the beach and started filming. There’s a lot that went into it and that it’s finally coming to air is exciting.
How has your background in dancing, music, and choreography come in handy for this role?
I grew up in musical theater, that’s where I got my start. The performance aspect is something that comes pretty natural to me just from doing it for so long. I came out with this dream of being an actor in TV and film and being a recording artist. I definitely had this dream of being in a Disney movie musical and that ended up happening. It definitely felt like home. Using song and dance to tell stories is something that I grew up doing so it helped a lot.
What are you most excited for the fans to see this time around?
The whole film, honestly. Every actor that works on a saga like this, they want the next one to be better than the first one. I can honestly say the sequel is 1000 times better than the first. It’s exciting. The choreography and music amps it up to an 11. We had a blast recording the music and filming the numbers. It all looks better than we originally anticipated. It’s exciting that people are about to see it.
What was it like working with the cast? Do you have any fun memories from the set that kind of stick out to you?
We were all a family going into it because we spent so much time together making the first movie and everything we’re doing now with promoting the movie. We went back to Puerto Rico and it was very familiar. We stayed where we stayed the first time around, in the same area with the same people. We were just a little older and more experienced and seasoned. Disney put us on an island together and told us to make a movie and we had a blast doing it. We had so much fun hanging out jamming and making music. That kind of thing.
You also star in Disney’s ‘Liv and Maddie’ which also gives you the opportunity to showcase your musical talents. How does it feel to be apart of this Disney family? Were you a fan beforehand?
I definitely was. I grew up with Even Stevens and That’s So Raven, which I feel like is the best show in Disney Channel history. We’re gonna be on The View this week and Raven is on The View now and I’m so beyond excited to meet her. I grew up wanting to be friends with her. I definitely grew up as a fan of Disney Channel. I think every kid that dreams of being an actor on TV dreams of being on the Disney Channel at one point in their life. I actually got to accomplish that. It blows my mind. I’m definitely honored to be apart of the network in any capacity.
You recently signed with Hollywood Records, Congratulations!
Thank you so much!
I was wondering if you could talk a little about what your fans can look forward to from the music you’re working on.
I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles and Michael Jackson and Prince and those guys. There was such an energy and soul. Pop Soul was a genre that didn’t really exist back then. That’s what I’m making. What would Pop Soul sound like in the 80s but in 2015. I really love what Sam Smith is doing what Nick Jonas is doing. Those are some guys in a similar lane. It’s exciting to be able to work with some of the same people they work with. To make a record that doesn’t really sound like anything else. I’m excited. That will come out next year, spring of 2016 is the plan and hopefully the fans will hear some music this Fall.
Would you be interested in doing a possible tour in the future?
That’s been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I saw Justin Timberlake recently and it’s so inspiring to see his body of work all these years. To walk around and everyone knows the lyrics to all these songs and appreciate what he’s done. We listen to music for a handful of different reasons, if we’re happy, sad, annoyed, or excited. We’re able to equate music with an emotion. To see that for other people, that’s something that I really dream of accomplishing. Being able to make music that hopefully people will listen to and appreciate and want to listen to more, that excites me. To be able to perform it live for them, that’s a cool concept to me. To be able to do that, is definitely something I really look forward to.
