Now that we finally know what happened in the tent (or do we?), Pop City Life chatted with Gavin MacIntosh from The Fosters about what’s coming up next for Jude and Connor, his real-life friendship with co-star Hayden Byerly, and how it feels to be a role model.
Check out our full interview with Gavin MacIntosh below!
First of all, thank you very much for following us on Tumblr and reblogging our interview with Hayden Byerly last week!
Of course!
Between the first and second parts of The Fosters season 2, there was a lot of speculation about what happened between Jude and Connor in the tent. In last week’s episode, Jude gave an explanation, but when it looked like he was going to say more, he stopped. Did we get the whole story or is there more to it?
There may be more to it. I can’t tell you guys if there is, but I would definitely keep that idea in mind!
Connor said something pretty terrible to Jude after the two of them left the principal’s office in last week’s episode, so it’s safe to say their friendship isn’t in a very good place right now. Will they be able to overcome that or is this the end for Connor and Jude?
I think right now, Jude and Connor are in a transition. Friends have transitions and they have their problems, but you’ve seen in earlier episodes that they can get over their problems and they can fix things and they’re good enough friends to overcome that, so I think that Jude and Connor will be back.
Did you have any idea that the show would take off the way it has and that fans would be so enthusiastic, or did it come as a complete surprise?
Well, I always knew that the show would be a hit. They’re covering so many issues and all the viewers can relate to it, but I had no idea it would be this big and that it would become this powerful of a show. We expected it, but we didn’t know it would be this big.
How does it feel for you to be a part of that momentum and to be a role model of sorts for young adults in similar situations to Connor?
Amazing. It really is. Just being a part of that and covering all these issues. I get tweets and direct messages and messages from people all over the place saying that seeing Connor be who he is on the show has helped them so much, and that’s an unbelievable feeling to know that you’re doing that for people.
That must be really cool.
It is!
How would you say season 2B compares to 2A and season 1? Is there a progression that you’ve seen, specifically related to Connor but also the show in general?
Season 1 is focused a little differently than season 2. As with all shows, in season 2, it’s getting more intense. They’re covering more issues – Callie and her adoption, Jude and Connor and his dad. Everything is just building up more and there’s more conflict and more drama. I can’t tell you what happens in season 2B, but you guys can expect a lot. It’s going to be crazy.
Without giving too much away, what’s coming up in the rest of the season that you’re most excited for in terms of the fan reaction?
I’m excited to see the fans react to Connor and Jude and how they develop. I think the fans are going to be surprised by what happens.
Good-surprised or bad-surprised?
I think it’ll be a good surprise.
When we last spoke to you back in August, you mentioned that Connor’s personality is very similar to your own. In contrast, Hayden told us recently that he’s fairly different to Jude. You play friends on the show and you’re also friends in real life – how different is your dynamic onscreen and off-screen?
I am sort of like Connor. It’s fairly easy for me to play him. I can relate to him, and I think viewers can relate to him too. Our friendship is sort of the same, and we’re really close in real life, but Hayden isn’t too much like Jude. It’s kind of amazing to see him turn it on when we get on set; he’s just a completely different person, and then when the camera stops, he’s back to Hayden again. It’s always amazing to see that.
We recently got the news that The Fosters was renewed for a third season, which is awesome. Can we expect to see you back in season 3, or do you not know yet?
I don’t know as of yet, but I’m sure Connor and Jude will be a part of that. I’d be surprised if they weren’t in there – Connor and Jude are such a big hit on the show!
I love their whole dynamic and how Connor helps Jude get out of his shell and is a really good friend to him. The nail polish thing was so cute.
That’s still my favorite scene!
