Read on for our exclusive interview with Mark Hildreth below:
‘Resurrection” has been a great hit for ABC and the return of season 2 has been highly anticipated amongst fans. How are you guys feeling about the success of the series?
Mark Hildreth: Resurrection means a whole lot to everyone on the cast, and we feel like we have a little family here. So it’s amazing to see that our family has grown to include people all over the USA, and lots of other places in the world too! I think it shows that viewers are yearning for something on their TV set that gets into the more important questions in life and isn’t just about entertainment.
“Fear” has been described as a motivator for the new season. Would you say the new episodes have a darker feel to them? What can viewers expect when season 2 kicks off?
Season 2 is going take a dark turn right off the bat with the arrival of Michelle Fairley’s character, Margaret Langston. She is the mother of Henry and Sheriff Fred and she is a real battle-axe. She brings with her secrets that even her own sons don’t know about. And it upsets the whole balance of power within the Langston family. Season 2 is going to be darker, because when a life-changing event like this happens, at first you’re like “what does this mean?” and after you’ve accepted it’s actually happening you start to go “What do we do about it?” That’s where we start at the beginning of season 2 of Resurrection.
Pastor Tom’s character has found himself in a bit of a love triangle. Will that tension between Tom, Rachael, and his wife continue into the new season?
The triangle of Tom, Rachael, and Janine is a major storyline in season 2. Tom has to figure out what to do with his faith, his marriage and his unborn child. It puts him in an almost impossible position, and he has to struggle with what to do. As always, Tom’s highest purpose is doing the right thing. But how do you do the right thing when there is no best decision?
Will Pastor Tom continue to struggle with his faith as the numbers of The Returned continue to grow?
Tom starts to become more himself in season 2. He starts to leave the rules and the dogma behind and go on his own. He believes in people, he believes that humanity is the highest value beyond all else. He is surrounded by people who use violence, fear and oppression to justify their lack of humanity. And in the midst of this storm he has to try to be a leader and at the same time manage his own internal feelings. So in a way his faith will be tested more than ever, and in a way it will be stronger than ever before.
The season 2 promotional trailer teases that “more are coming”. Will the viewers begin to understand more in regards to why so many people are returning?
Well, I would love to tell you of course, but then I’d have to kill you! That’s the big secret, so yes of course there are hints and clues dropped along the way. But the biggest clue comes with Margaret Langston re-appearing, and I promise you that after that…all hell breaks loose!
Do you find yourself surprised by the plot twists as they unfold?
We, the actors, are as surprised as anyone with the plot twists. There is a MAJOR plot twist in the middle of the second season that is REALLY going to blow everybody’s minds. Almost to the point of not being able to handle it! And as we get the scripts and find out what happens week to week, we have that very same experience!
Can you talk a little about what viewers can expect from the new additions to the cast?
They can expect the most top-class, high-level acting they have seen on TV. The new cast members of Resurrection have such talent and such presence it’s going to really change the fabric of the world in Arcadia.
What other challenges will Tom be facing this season?
Tom has to start to fight against the outside forces that begin to rally against the returned. So he’s not just struggling internally with his feelings anymore – he has to start to fight for what’s right with others as well.
Finally, we’ve been eager to hear your new music. How is your new album coming along?
The new album is slowly but surely writing itself! If you can imagine a sound right in between Elton John and Stevie Wonder, that’s what I’m going for. Music has been a part of me since I was very little and it’s my second love! My two original albums are available on Itunes and through my website at www.markhildreth.com.
Is there anything else your fans can look forward to from you next?
Nothing I can talk about now! But I always stay in touch with all my fans at www.markhildreth.com!
