The Fosters 2×05 is packed with enough plotlines to fill a feature-length presentation. Read on for our recap of “Truth Be Told”:
The end of The Fosters 2×04 revealed that Jude had stopped speaking. In this episode, Stef explains his condition to the rest of the family – according to his therapist, he’s developed an anxiety disorder called selective mutism. Stef and Lena advise the kids to be patient with him and not make a big deal about it.
In a case of spectacularly bad timing, Callie‘s half-sister, Sophia, drops by with a gift. Later, Callie tells boyfriend Wyatt she can’t see Sophia anymore because of the effect the situation is having on Jude. Wyatt suggests that Jude’s mutism is “his way of feeling like he’s finally in charge of something in his life.”
Callie isn’t the only one worried about Jude; Connor approaches Lena at school, asks if he can do anything to help and reveals his father’s assumption that Jude is gay. Later, Lena tells Jude that Connor came to her. She reassures him that she and Stef are happy to have him as a son and that there’s nothing he can’t tell them.
Brandon & Dani & Mike, oh my…
What’s weirder than the love triangle involving a (soon-to-be) foster brother and sister that defined the last season? The one composed of Brandon, his father, and his father’s girlfriend. When Brandon asks Dani how she can live with herself, Dani rationalizes their tryst by saying she was broken up with Mike at the time. Then she turns the tables on Brandon by accusing him of using her to get back at his father.
“You didn’t screw me that night, you screwed him. … You know it and so will he, so before you consider unburdening yourself of all this guilt, keep one thing in mind: If your dad finds out, I’m not the only one he’ll never forgive.”
Jesus’ girl drama
If there’s one thing you can rely on in this show, it’s Jesus‘ steady stream of girl drama. In The Fosters 2×05, he finds ex-girlfriend Emma waiting by his locker. She apologizes for being bossy and says it may have been a mistake to break up.
Later, Jesus informs Mariana that he told Emma they should take some time to think about their future. Mariana interprets this as Jesus giving himself a chance to break up with Hayley first, and encourages him to be honest with both girls.
Jesus tries to talk to Hayley, but before he can articulate how he’s feeling, she gushes about how well he understands her. Oh boy. She wants to go public, but he wants to wait. Later, Hayley fills in Mariana and asks her to tell Emma about the relationship. Hayley is Mariana’s only real friend on the dance team, so Mariana reluctantly talks to Emma as requested, which makes Jesus furious.
In a showdown at home, Jesus tells Mariana that his relationships aren’t her business. She says they are when his actions affect her friends on the dance team, and he calls her a terrible dancer. She strikes back by saying he’s a terrible brother and boyfriend, then claims she’s “taking a stand for womankind.” He accuses her of wanting to fit in and storms off in a huff, leaving her to question whether his accusation has merit.
Brooding Brandon takes a day off
Oblivious to his brother’s girl trouble, Brandon heads into the woods with Lou and the rest of Someone’s Little Sister. Their goal? Escaping real life and attaining a new level of musical transcendence via special brownies. He’s reluctant at first, but Lou urges him to “give brooding Brandon a day off.” Turns out the brownies are, in bandmate Matt‘s words, “hella strong,” and Brandon’s apparently one of those people who gets nervous and twitchy after ingesting pot. He wanders off and eventually contacts Lena, who comes to pick him up and asks if he’s OK.
“Not really, no. I ate a pot brownie and I, I’m freaking out. Is that normal? I don’t feel normal. I feel nervous. Have you ever had pot before? I feel like you haven’t, which is smart. You know you guys told us to uh, call if we ever needed a ride home. I shouldn’t have called. I’m sorry.”
I’m laughing my ass off at this point, but Lena restrains herself and explains that pot makes some people anxious. They go on a walk while it wears off, during which Brandon rambles about trains and Moscow and “Crime & Punishment.” Lena assures him that tomorrow, everything will be back to normal. Brandon disagrees miserably, then admits he slept with Dani.
Wyatt & Callie step it up
When a makeout session gets hot and heavy, Callie says she wants to take things to the next level with Wyatt but ends up freaking out. Wyatt’s supportive, telling her it’s OK if she’s not ready, and she assures him that everything’s fine – but the ferocity with which she wipes down a table at work signals to co-worker Daphne that something’s up. Daphne tells her to “sit and spill,” then suggests she was just nervous. Callie worries that she’s still in love with Brandon, then thinks she sees former foster brother and abuser Liam through the window of the burger joint.
When Callie gets home, Jude’s silently playing video games. She unsuccessfully tries communicating with him verbally, then messages him: “Please talk to me.” (Let’s take a second to note that his username is judicorn and hers is CallieAmity.) Jude closes the message and goes back to his game, so she tries again: “I thought I saw Liam today.” He still doesn’t say anything but puts a comforting hand on her arm.
The Ana mystery deepens
The twins’ birth mother has been missing since the end of the last season, and Stef’s long wondered if Mike had something to do with her disappearance. She suspects that a murdered Jane Doe in the morgue could be Ana, and orders Ana’s dental records. When she finally shares her suspicions with Lena in The Fosters 2×05, Lena protests that Mike isn’t capable of murder – but after Stef counters that he would do anything to defend his family, Lena encourages her to turn over the records.
Outside the precinct, Dani approaches Stef, saying Mike’s been leaving early for work and coming home late. She’s worried he might be on drugs, having an affair, or drinking again. Stef tails Mike to a motel, knocks on the door… and Ana opens it.
