Read on for our recap of American Horror Story: Cult 7×04, “11/9.”
In this week’s episode of American Horror Story: Cult, last year’s presidential election is back being the main focus.
As American Horror Story: Cult 7×04 begins, TV reporter Beverly Hope (Adina Porter) is covering Election Night, although it seems her boss won’t be using much of her work in the end. Her disappointment doesn’t go unnoticed by her colleague Serina Belinda (Emma Roberts), who can’t wait to mock her. We learn that Serina used to cover traffic, but somehow managed to become the boss’ favorite.
In line to vote that night, we see familiar faces who are strangers to one another: Ally and Ivy, Winter, Harrison and Meadow. We watch as they enter the secrecy of the ballot box to cast their votes. Beverly votes for Hillary Clinton, Serina for Donald Trump, and Dr. Vincent for Clinton, while Meadow writes a name that isn’t on the list: Oprah. Winter votes for Clinton, as does Ivy – but not Ally, who casts her vote for Jill Stein. Oh, and Kai votes for Trump, obviously.
The day after the election, Kai is at the gym where Harrison works as a trainer. Now we know how the two met! We also learn that Harrison and Meadow’s bank foreclosed on their house, for which Harrison blames Meadow’s handling of the money.
As American Horror Story: Cult 7×04 continues, Harrison shares his troubles with Kai. Kai’s pep talk seems to work magic, because Harrison doesn’t feel upset anymore! On the contrary, he starts a new life free from powerlessness by killing his tyrant boss – much to Kai’s pleasure.
Our good mentor helps Harrison cover up the murder and convinces the other man that he’s taken a step toward something bigger and better.
Later that day, Meadow finally meets Kai. It’s an auspicious introduction, as she finds him with Harrison in a motel bathroom… disposing of the body of Harrison’s boss.
A month later, the body (minus the head and the hands) is found in a landfill, and Beverly is sent to cover the story. While watching the news, Kai takes an interest in the reporter. He notes that she hasn’t been onscreen for a while and finds a video that explains her absence. After a period of being constantly interrupted by men shouting obscenities at her while she was filming, Beverly finally snapped and retaliated with violence. Later, she voluntarily checked herself in for 30 days of psychiatric rehabilitation.
Kai persists in his nefarious dealings as American Horror Story: Cult 7×04 goes on. After her boss once again devalued her work in favor of Serina’s, Beverly is intent on slashing the tires of his car, but Kai finds her and buys her a coffee. In the process, he shares his intentions with her and reveals that running for city council is just the beginning. He’s aiming for State Senate, then Congress. Anything is possible – after all, just look at the election results. Kai tells Beverly that he needs her to spread fear and terror on his behalf.
A few days later, wee meet Serina out in the field, filming at a local fair. Suddenly, three people wearing clown masks appear out of nowhere and kill her. They’re the same group who killed Ally and Ivy’s neighbors at the beginning of American Horror Story: Cult!
When Beverly questions Kai about the incident, he admits he was behind it and says he did it for her. With that, Beverly gives in and joins Kai’s club. Using her job as a reporter, she helps to amplify the public’s insecurity and fear by announcing a sprawl of crime and decay devouring the community. To set up Kai for success, she stresses the fact that the local government is turning a blind eye.
Toward the end of American Horror Story: Cult 7×04, we find out that Winter and Ivy met during a Clinton rally held shortly before Election Night. Ally stayed home, claiming she didn’t think it was necessary to attend – but of course, we now know she didn’t support Clinton. Winter and Ivy, on the other hand, seem to have common ideals and political views. And not only that, they appear to be partners in crime: Together, they take revenge on a man who assaulted Ivy during the rally…
