Read on for our exclusive interview with Graham Verchere below:
What would you say initially motivated you to pursue acting as a career? Was there anyone who influenced or inspired you?
My brother and I first started because our cousin was. Since then I would say the incredible people I’ve been lucky enough to work with have convinced me that it’s not something I could ever stop doing.
Can you tell us a little about your role in Stargirl and what viewers can expect from Leo as a character?
Leo is a kid who gives up a lot of himself to blend in. He kind of sticks to behind the scenes work or anything in a crowd. He needs someone like Stargirl to show him how to free himself, but it’s a journey.
Would you say you and Leo are alike at all? Were you familiar with the Stargirl novel prior to being cast in the project? If so, did that help you prepare for your role?
I read the book during the audition process and it felt like I was reading it about myself. I’ve lived a different life than Leo, obviously, but I feel like I know everything he’s feeling and that we react the same way. It made playing Leo a lot easier, because it was almost like it was just me saying the lines.
How has the experience been working alongside the cast and crew?
Absolutely incredible. This movie was really something special to work on. Everybody wanted to be there and everybody did their best. It was always wonderful on set and off set. It’s rare that you get something like this to come along.
What are you most eager for viewers to see once Stargirl premieres? Do you feel that this story is an important one to tell?
I can’t wait for people to hear the messages and morals of the book in movie form. Aside from being a wonderful story, it has tons of great lessons about being yourself, fitting in, and balancing the two, in a real way. They’re things that everybody needs to hear at some point.
Disney is such an iconic part of entertainment. Is it exciting to become a part of the Disney family?
It’s crazy!! Being able to work on a project from the company that’s made such an impact on so many people, myself included, is amazing.
Disney+ is one of my favorite streaming platforms. What are you go-to movies or television shows that you love to stream lately?
I LOVED The Mandalorian. I’ve been so busy with the release and school that I haven’t been able to watch anything since then, but I’m so excited for season two!
