In Grimm 6×03, the directorial debut of David Giuntoli (Nick), Captain Renard comes face to face with his greatest enemy…
Read on for our recap of Grimm 6×03, “Oh Captain, My Captain.”
When Grimm 6×03 begins, the police are on the hunt for Nick, who is still at the spice shop.
In the meantime, Adalind comes back home and meets with Renard, who tells her he expects her support as first lady of Portland.
Back at Nick’s loft, Nick decides to leave the miraculous stick hidden in the tunnels under the loft. He confesses to Eve that every time the stick is in his hands, he finds it hard to put down. Eve also tells Nick she can feel he loves Adalind.
Meanwhile, at the precinct, Wu and Hank are finalizing their resignations. Wu is angry about the injustice they’re suffering from Renard, so Hank tries to calm him down.
Back in the tunnels, Eve and Nick reflect on Diana’s powers. She was able to see the symbols on the cloth when nobody else could. They recall Nick’s mother’s words: In good hands, Diana could do a lot of good, but in the wrong hands, great evil.
Wu and Hank join them, and Nick has an idea that could stop Renard. He wants to use the spell Eve used to turn into Renard to get information from Rachel, only this time it won’t be Eve who transforms – Nick will.
At the precinct, Renard is visited by Rachel’s co-worker, Jeremiah, who saw Renard entering Rachel’s apartment the night she was killed. He blackmails Renard, saying the captain has 24 hours, or he will talk to the police about what he saw. Later, with the help of the new Portland police captain, a wesen, Renard gets rid of Jeremiah.
When Nick informs Adalind about his plan to turn into Renard, she helps by providing Renard’s hair for the spell, along with some clothes. Monroe tells her that she needs to keep Renard home until he sees the 7 p.m. news. Just what is it that they’re planning in Grimm 6×03?
Unfortunately, just as Monroe is ready to leave, Renard comes home. Adalind manages to hide Monroe, and eventually helps him escape. While hidden, Monroe eavesdrops on the conversation between Adalind and Renard. When Adalind asks why he has blood on his shirt, he answers that he had to take care of someone who thought he could blackmail him about Rachel’s death.
As Grimm 6×03 continues, Monroe arrives at the spice shop just in time to tell Nick, Eve, and Rosalee about the conversation between Adalind and Renard. Nick is ready to try the spell, but Rosalee has some doubts. This kind of spell has probably never been performed on a Grimm before, so it might have some side effects. However, there’s no time to do research now. After a few seconds, Nick is Renard – but in wesen form. He can’t really go out that way… Eve tells him he needs to relax, and it works!
Adalind manages to keep the real Renard home, where they are discussing Diana’s education. The 7 p.m. news airs on TV, and suddenly Renard appears!
Nick-Renard is giving a speech in which he says he has to abdicate the mayorship, as the recent attack on the north precinct requires his full attention. Nick-Renard also announces that the manhunt for detective Nick Burkhardt was staged to bring the real killer to justice.
Back at the precinct, Nick-Renard leaves Wu guarding the entrance to stop the real Renard when he arrives. Hank helps him to retrieve the real Renard’s computer and files, but they are interrupted by Captain Grossante, the wesen who helped the real Renard get rid of Jeremiah. Nick-Renard doesn’t know about Grossante, or the deal he made with the real Renard. Grossante threatens him by assuring that if he doesn’t get what he was promised, there’s going to be consequences. Nick-Renard manages to handle the situation, leaving a very angry Grossante behind him.
Shortly after, Nick-Renard and Hank are ready to leave the precinct. Nick is feeling the spell’s effects are almost over, but disastrously, they are stopped by reporters. In the meantime, the real Renard arrives at the precinct, greeted by Wu. Nick-Renard manages to handle the reporters and is about to leave the precinct when he meets the real Renard. A fight between the two is about to start, but they are interrupted once again by the reporters. The real Renard is left alone facing the press, while Wu and Hank bring Nick-Renard away.
Nick-Renard gets to the spice shop with Wu and Hank, where they are greeted by Eve, Rosalee and Monroe. Nick-Renard tells them about the pain he felt back at the precinct, and Eve tells him that was his body trying to turn back. However, Nick is still Renard!
The real Renard calls Nick-Renard. He’s surprised the spell hasn’t worn off yet, but Eve helps Nick with the perfect justification: The spell will keep him as Renard unless they come to an agreement. They plan to meet face-to-face, ironically.
Hank and Wu go to make sure Adalind and the kids are safe, and bring them to the spice shop. After all, Real-Renard might think to use Kelly against Nick.
As Grimm 6×03 escalates, the two Renards meet, and we don’t know who is who anymore. They start a fight, but neither can prevail, as they are equals.
They try to talk through a solution, and Nick-Renard suggests blaming the attack on the north precinct on Bonaparte. Saying cops under Bonaparte’s control killed others would justify Renard’s decision to stay as captain and lead the investigation.
Real-Renard is not sure they could all go back to working together like in the good old days, but Nick-Renard replies that they will have to find a way to make it work. Nick also says that he wants Adalind and Kelly back with him. Renard has no objections, but he reminds Nick that Diana loves her dad, and she would hate it if something bad were ever to happen to him.
Nick-Renard goes back to the spice shop, where he explains the agreement. Diana calls him “daddy” but soon realizes he’s not her real father. She throws him violently against a wall before Adalind can stop her.
Immediately afterward, Nick has his body back. Whatever Diana did to him, it helped reverse the spell.
Back at home, Renard has a curious encounter with… Meisner! Renard thought he had killed the other man, but Meisner is still alive and tells him he chose the wrong side.
