The fourth episode of American Horror Story: Hotel, “Devil’s Night” introduces a new character and shows us how they celebrate Halloween at the Hotel Cortez.
Read on for our recap.
Ms. Evers tells John about the time when her son was kidnapped, during Halloween. The little boy was then killed by a serial killer.
Back in his office, John investigates the crime, and he finds out it happened in the 20s. He sees a picture of Ms. Evers, looking exactly as she is now.
When John goes back to the Cortez he meets a new acquaintance of our mysterious hotel: Aileen (Lily Rabe). It’s her 13th year at the Cortez. John tells her she looks exactly like Aileen Wuornos, a serial killer he saw a documentary about. Aileen killed seven men.
John is pretty drunk by then, so it’s easy for Ailen to knock him out. When he wakes up, he’s tied to a chair, with Aileen screaming that ten women were killed in California, and she was number ten.
John can’t believe she’s the real (dead) Aileen, but she has an explanation: the Devil’s Night at the Hotel Cortez. John manages to escape and block her.
When he tries to call the police, Liz Taylor tells him he’s wasting his time. James March won’t let anyone ruin his Devil’s Night.
The Devil’s Night is the Hotel Cortez’s very special version of Halloween. March has a special dinner event for the night, and much to Liz Taylor’s surprise, John is invited.
John finds himself at dinner with the most infamous dead serial killers of the past, including the one who killed Ms. Evers’ son. All of them have met March when they were alive, and all of them have stayed at the Hotel Cortez. They learned from the master, and the Devil’s Night is their annual meeting.
John, drugged and tied again to a chair, is in for the craziest night of his life… The special Halloween ends with all the serial killers murdering a poor man provided by Sally.
John loses consciousness, and when he wakes up he finds Sally alone, telling him he was screaming and making him believe that all he saw has been a nightmare.
Alex takes her son Holden back home after she found him inside the Hotel Cortez. When he tells her he’s thirsty, Alex goes to the kitchen to bring him some juice, and when she comes back she finds Holden sucking blood from their dog. Holden tells her he doesn’t feel good, that he needs his “other mommy”, so Alex brings him back to the Hotel Cortez. She sees the coffin where Holden goes back into, and she realizes Scarlett was telling the truth.
Suddenly, The Countess appears behind her back. She explains to Alex that by kidnapping “her children”, she saved them from neglect. The day Holden was kidnapped, John failed to take good care of him, and that’s why The Countess chose Holden. She also explains Alex the consequences of having contracted her virus: a healthy, everlasting life. The Countess also proposes to Alex to become like her son. But to do that, she will have to give her loyalty to The Countess. Alex tells her she will call the police and runs away, but The Countess is sure she would never risk losing her son.
In the end, Alex comes to the Hotel and asks The Countess to turn her, so she can be with Holden.
