A Grimm is someone who can see into the heart of darkness. Someone who sees things other people don’t understand.
Grimm is a NBC supernatural fantasy procedural telling the adventures of Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), a homicide detective who works and lives in Portland with his girlfriend Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch).
At the beginning of Season 1 Nick finds out (thanks to his aunt Marie) that he is the descendant of an ancient hierarchy of German guardians and hunters, called ‘Grimms’.
The Grimms’ main focus was to protect the world from the ‘Wesen’, mythological creatures who can hide their real form by looking as normal human beings. Some of them are living in peace, others are a threat that Nick tries to fight.
Nick works with his partner Hank (Russell Hornsby), who initially has no idea about his friend’s ‘inheritance’. He will find that out eventually. They are very often helped by Sergeant Wu (Reggie Lee).
During Season 1 Nick meets Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell), who is a Wesen himself. Monroe becomes one of Nick’s closest friends, helping him out during a lot of investigations. Throughout Season 1 and 2, the character of Rosalee (Bree Turner) is also introduced. She’s a Wesen too, a pacific one, and she will become very close with Monroe.
We also learn that Nick’s boss at the Portland Police, Captain Renard (Sasha Roiz), is very well involved in the whole Wesen world, being a Wesen himself.
Nick’s duty is to continue his ancestors’ work, fighting against all kind of creatures.
Most of the episodes are inspired by the stories from The Brothers Grimm, others are inspired by legends. All of the episodes begin with an opening quote taken from those tales, that serves as introduction to the story about to be told.
Nick’s aunt Marie left him as ‘inheritance’ a trailer.
This trailer is the keeper of all the Grimms’ secrets, knowledge, stories, weapons.
Nick goes there very often, alone or with his friends, to gain informations about the Wesen he’s about to fight.
You can take a very interesting tour of Nick’s trailer on the NBC website.
By the end of Season 2 and beginning of Season 3, Nick is turned into a zombie by his greatest enemy, Captain Sean Renard’s half brother named Eric Renard.
Luckely, Rosalee manages to help and cure him.
During Season 3 Nick is always helped by Monroe, Rosalee, Juliette and Hank in his Wesen-investigations. The five of them form now a solid group.
In case you will start watching this series now, you can do it and read the recaps of all the previous episodes on the NBC dedicated website.
This series mixes some interesting genres, taking inspiration from some of The Brothers Grimms tales. This is the reason why I’ve started watching the series in the first place, I was curious to find out how the show would use them, and I have to say a lot of them were really satisfying.
All the actors play their parts amazingly well, and I was lucky enough to meet some of them at The Monte-Carlo TV Festival in June of 2013, they are all absolutely kind and friendly.
We will start with our recaps from episode 3×13, that will air on NBC on February 28th, 2014.
