What is Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) doing in his old house in Malibu, with a shotgun? This is how the new episode of The Mentalist, “Fire And Brimstone”, opens.
We find it out thanks to a flashback. Two days earlier, Jane and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) talk with the team, Cho (Tim Kang), Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti), and they decide together that the best way to finally reveal Red John’s identity is to gather all the five suspects together in one place, and see who among them has the tattoo with three dots.
Lisbon tells Jane that she’s on board with his plan, but on one condition: she asks Jane to be with him, when he will reveal Red John’s identity. Jane agrees, but Lisbon doesn’t look satisfied.
Jane and the team start to work on talking with the five suspects (Reede Smith, Sheriff Mc Allister, Ray Haffner, Gale Bertram and Brett Stiles), giving them a “rendezvous” for the next Thursday night, 8pm, at Jane’s old house in Malibu, the house where Red John killed his wife and daughter.
There is an important scene between Jane and Lisbon after, in which Jane shows Lisbon a shotgun. Lisbon tells him that she knows he doesn’t want her to be at the rendevous with the five suspects, because he thinks she will try to stop him from killing Red John. She tells him that sometimes, men like Red John don’t deserve a trial. Does Jane really believe her?
On the estabilished day, Jane and Lisbon set off to Jane’s house. During the travel, Jane stops his car, telling Lisbon he wants to see the sunset.
In the following scene, Jane thanks Lisbon for everything she has done for him, telling her that she has no idea what she means to him. They hug. Jane tells her that he has a surprise and runs to his car… only to leave Lisbon there, alone, without her phone (he picked her pocket while hugging her). Jane doesn’t want Lisbon to be there when he will reveal Red John’s identity, because his plan is to kill Red John, while Lisbon has always been very clear on the fact that she wants Red John to be arrested.
Jane arrives at his house, he waits for the five suspects while Lisbon manages to “borrow” a car to reach Jane’s house.
Finally, the five suspects are all together in one room. Jane forces them to take off their shirts to show him their left shoulder. The one with the tattoo is Red John.
But, to Jane’s surprise, three of the five men have the same tattoo: Sheriff McAllister, Reede Smith and Gale Bertram. McAllister tells Jane that “it’s not what you think, you got it wrong”.
Jane orders the three men to stand on their feet and walk against a wall. We hear a gun’s shot.
Meanwhile, Lisbon arrives at Jane’s house. When she gets there, there’s an explosion.
Are Jane and the suspects all dead? And what/who is the source of that explosion?
