Sad news for Bunheads fans. ABC Family has decided not to renew the series for a second season. The network had certainly taken their time to come to a decision, perhaps waiting to see the success of new series Twisted and The Fosters to see if it would be possible for Bunheads to return. Ultimately, the decision was not in their favor.
Good news if you’re a fan of ABC Family’s hit dramas Pretty Little Liars, Switched at Birth, The Lying Game, or Bunheads. All four dramas now have a definitive return date. The shows will be kicking off 2013 with a bang. Switched at Birth will return with their second season Monday, January 7th at 8pm with Bunheads following at 9pm. Pretty Little Liars will return with their much anticipated second half of season 3 Tuesday, January 8th at 8pm with The Lying Game following at 9pm.
Here are the brief season descriptions for each series that will let you know what you can expect when your favorites return.
“This season sees dramatic changes in the lives of the Kennish and Vasquez families as a result of the verdict in the baby switch trial. Gilles Marini joins the cast in season two as a series regular.”
“The new episodes pick-up a couple of months after Michelle has left Paradise to try and return to her former life in Las Vegas.”
Pretty Little Liars:
“Radley Sanitarium has given Mona a clean bill of health and she is headed back to the halls of Rosewood High, much to the Liars’ dismay. With their former tormentor now back in their everyday life, Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer take very different views of the “new” Mona. Sure she made their lives a living hell, but is she really cured? And what other secrets could she be holding onto? It is up to Mona to prove to the Liars if she has changed or not.”
The Lying Game:
“As the twins’ saga continues in Season 2, there are more surprises, secrets and lies. The girls’ recently revealed birth mother Rebecca (Charisma Carpenter) lures Sutton (Alexandra Chando) into her plans for the Mercer family. Emma (Chando) grows closer to Thayer, while still being drawn to Ethan, who has started to reconnect with Sutton. Kristin feels betrayed after Ted came clean about his long ago affair with Rebecca, but Ted might be hiding even more shocking revelations. And Mads connects with a mysterious new guy in town who brings a whole new level of secrets with him.”
ABC Family Renews Bunheads, Switched at Birth, Melissa & Joey, and Baby Daddy – Cancels Jane By Design
Great news for ABC Family fans! The network has just renewed a handful of their hit shows including Switched at Birth, Bunheads, Baby Daddy, and Melissa & Joey. Unfortunately, the network chose to pass on renewing Jane By Design. I personally love all of these shows so I’m very happy with this news. Baby Daddy was a surprisingly hilarious sitcom for me and it’s no news how much I love Switched at Birth.
Be sure to tune in to Switched at Birth when it returns on September 3rd.
After a shocking incident in the pilot episode of Bunheads, the town tries to pick up the pieces in the second episode “For Fanny.” Are you guys liking this show? Here is the promo preview video for the upcoming new episode of Bunheads.

ABC Family advertised the premiere of Bunheads as the “Most Anticipated” new show on the network. I wasn’t impressed by the previews and I can’t take their opinion seriously when they also have numerous positive things to say about The Secret Life. That being said, Bunheads was not at all what I expected.
The show centers on a frustrated Vegas showgirl named Michelle (Sutton Foster) who desperately wants to dance and use the skills she’s learned over the years. Unable to land any auditions, she’s completely fed up with her life and the fact that Cameron from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (Alan Ruck) is stalking her with beautiful jewelry and flowers. Of all the problems you could have, that isn’t a bad one.
Hubbell is a lonely guy with a crush who would love nothing more than to take her away from all her problems and take care of her. Can a rich guy who lives on the ocean propose to me out of nowhere? I’m serious. I’ll take applications.
In the real world, this guy would probably be a serial killer who would love to chop her up and put her in his trunk. But this is ABC Family. He actually loves her. Despite actually telling him she doesn’t love him, she marries him and moves with him to his small, quiet town.
It’s here that I’ve mentally created a drinking game. Take a shot every time you notice a Gilmore Girls parallel. I’ve noticed quite a bunch so far.
There’s the harp player from season 1 (Alex Borstein), Gypsy, the small, eclectic town, the Lorelai-esque one liners, and of course Hubbell’s mother, Fanny, played by Emily Bishop. And if I’m not mistaken, the song that plays as Michelle walks through town is the exact same guitar strum and lalas we heard on Gilmore Girls. Or at the very least, the same singer. It’s like they’re not even trying to hide the similarities. But Gilmore Girls is one of my favorite shows so I’m not at all complaining.
Also, in the corner of my eye I notice the piano player. Is that the random piano guy from Glee? Every time someone says Hubbell I think of The Way We Were.
Michelle struggles with the whole town thinking she’s a stripper and Hubbell’s mother hating her. She walks in on Fanny’s group of girls from her ballet class. They’re made up of a handful of girls that lack confidence. There’s one who hates her body type, there’s another who hates her boobs, and then there’s the token bitchy girl. Michelle dances with them for awhile and inspires them and it’s all lovely. Then she bonds with Fanny and they too go dancing in a bar.
Then a townie walks in with a cop to announce that Hubbell died in a car crash. Well. That came out of nowhere. I was actually really enjoying the episode up until that moment. I thought Alan Ruck was great as his character. Now I’m just depressed.
What did you think of the premiere? Will you be tuning in next week?
