The very first scene of the new episode of The Mentalist, “Grey Water”, is one that will keep you on the edge of your
seat.
Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) have just gotten home in san Francisco, with their baby Maddy.
Rigsby is impatient to know if there are news from Lisbon (Robin Tunney). He calls her, and Lisbon tells him that SFPD is sending the case over to the FBI in Austin. They will handle the investigation from now on. It’s obvious now that whoever killed Ardiles and LaRoche is the same who bugged the team’s phones, somebody who was arrested by the CBI, and who’s holding a grudge.
After the conversation with Lisbon is over, Rigsby and Van Pelt are ready to take care of Maddy, but someone’s inside their house. This person starts shooting toward Rigsby’s direction. To protect his baby, Risgby rushes inside a room, and after a few moments Van Pelt manages to react, and the man leaves their house.
Rigsby and Van Pelt leave San Francisco for Austin, where they meet Lisbon, Cho (Tim Kang) and Jane (Simon Baker) again.
After a briefing, the team tries to shorten the list of suspects, and the final list of names is:
John Hutten, a bank robber;
Donny Culpepper, involved in several murders;
Tommy Volker, a sociopath;
Richard Haibach, a pedophile;
Linus Wagner, the homicidal shrink from Season 1.
The next step is finding out who’s still in prison, and who has an alibi.
In the meantime, Jane has to concentrate on another case with agent Fisher (Emily Swallow). In Bradley, Texas, a body was found on a fracking site. Victim’s name is Dan Becker, a local rancher. He brought a lawsuit against a regional energy company called Millman Oil. He claimed the company polluted his ranch’s groundwater, and not only his.
After the investigations, it turnes out the killer is Bryce Kendrick, a long time friend of the victim.
He knew that Dan wanted to enter the Oil Company’s offices to take a book that contained a list of names, people the company had paid off to avoid a lawsuit. Bryce helped Dan to get inside the offices, once inside Dan took the book from the company’s safe. Bryce saw that the safe contained money as well, so he took it. When Dan found out, the two had a fight and Bryce killed Dan.
Meanwhile, one after the other, some of the team’s suspects are ruled out. The strongest suspicions are for Richard Haibach. It appears he has an alibi for the time of Ardiles’ murder. His lawyer asks Abbott to drop the investigation on her client.
But Abbott later tells Lisbon that they aren’t going to drop the investigation. He tells her to put a surveillance team to keep Haibach under control.
After a long day of investigations, Rigsby and Cho decide to go out to have a drink. Rigsby calls Van Pelt who’s resting at their motel. After they end their conversation, Van Pelt falls back asleep. But someone is inside her room…
We’ll find out what’s going to happen to her on next Sunday’s episode.
“Grey Water” marks the first reunion of the team after Jane killed Red John, even if Jane is separated from the other team’s members for most of the episode, as we see the two investigations being conducted in parallel.
The lack of any kind of security and protection for Van Pelt sounded a bit off, making her an easy target.
Is Haibach the man the team is looking for? Or is there someone else who wants to hurt the former CBI team?
The Mentalist will be back next Sunday, 10pm, CBS.
