As Ally learns the truth about her wife’s involvement with Kai’s cult, we learn the truth about Ivy’s motivations for joining him. With a final twist.
Read on for our recap of American Horror Story: Cult 7×06, “Mid-Western Assassin”.
During a rally in support of Kai, who’s running for city council, a mass shooting tragically kills a large number of people. Ivy is there. When the police arrive, she finds out that the shooter is Ally.
Kai lies on the floor. Is he dead too?
Thanks a flashback, we go back to the night Ally finds Meadow, who tells her about Kai’s cult. Right after Meadow disappears again, Ally receives a call from Doctor Vincent. He explains Ivy called him, concerned about her. At this point, though, Ally doesn’t know who to trust anymore, and with reason. Vincent urges Ally to calm down and not do anything that could harm her chances to get Oz back.
Ally does the exact contrary, though, when she goes back to the neighbors’ house in search of Meadow. She finds her alive, frees her, and together they manage to escape Harrison.
They find refuge at Ally and Ivy’s restaurant, where Ally demands answers from Meadow about Kai’s cult, about her wife’s involvement in it.
Meadow explains Ally how the cult works, how Kai chooses the members, how he recruits them, something we have seen happening in the previous episodes.
Meadows reveals how she had fallen in love with Kai, thinking her love was returned. But then, when she saw him with Ivy and understood it was just a way to lure people, she took the decision to leave Kai, once and for all. That was her death sentence.
At this point, Ally wants to go to the police, to the FBI, to try and stop Kai, but Meadows retorts that the only way to stop Anderson is to kill him.
Another flashback shows us how Ivy met Kai, how he chose her to be in his cult, and why. We learn that Ivy is, in fact, full of hatred towards Ally. She was the one who gave birth to Oz (Ivy has endometriosis), she was the one who fed him, making Ivy feel as if she was less important, less of a mother to Oz. Ivy wants her son all for herself now, she wants to have Ally out of her and her son’s life, so Kai suggests a way. The clowns, the new neighbors, anything to make Ally look like an unstable person, not fit to be a parent.
Finally, Ally brings Meadow to doctor Vincent, asks him to talk to her and tells her that she’ll be back in a couple of hours. Her destination is the house of Sally Keffler, Kai’s biggest opponent in the run for city council. She reveals to Keffler everything that Meadow has just said to her, about Kai and his cult, about how he is the sole responsible for the murders that happened in the past weeks.
Sally says she believes her and that she is willing to help Ally. It’s in that moment that clowns enter Keffler’s house. We know now very well who they are. Ally runs away, leaving Sally to face them. Kai reveals himself in front of Sally and decides to stage a suicide to eliminate his opponent.
Still hidden inside Sally’s house, Ally finds herself face to face with another of Kai’s clowns. She calls it with her wife’s name, and the clown leaves her where she is, without revealing her presence.
Immediately after, Ally runs back to doctor Vincent’s, but Meadow has already left. She didn’t talk to the doctor about the cult, and Ally is upset her only witness to Kai’s crimes has disappeared again. The doctor thinks Ally is having visions again, he doesn’t believe her story.
This is the last straw for Ally. Now she knows that she is alone.
And this is how we go back to the present day, to the rally.
When Ally arrives at the meeting place, where a lot of people have gathered around Kai, she sees Meadow among them. She sees her take a gun out of her bag, she sees her firing it towards Kai, and towards the people present. Ally tries to stop her from killing innocent people. She tries to take the gun from Meadow’s hand, but before she can do that Meadow kills herself. Ally is left standing with Meadow’s gun in her hands, so it’s easy to see how the police assumed she is responsible for the shooting.
It’s in the very last minutes that lead to the end of this week’s episode of American Horror Story: Cult that we learn that it was all staged. Meadow’s kidnapping, her being in danger. It was all a fabrication to lure Ally, to lead her to that moment at the rally. That’s the final act that will ban her from seeing her son ever again, just as Ivy wanted. And that act will bring a huge amount of popularity to Kai, who in fact is not dead. Meadow shot him, but not fatally.
