The Fosters 5×04 was filled with relationship hurdles – and not every couple weathered the storm. Read on for 4 things to know about The Fosters 5×04, “Too Fast, Too Furious.”
1. Callie and Aaron are getting closer…
…and an anxious Callie figures the best person to talk to about potentially having sex with a trans guy is – wait for it – a different trans guy. It’s great to see Cole again (he’s working full-time at the local LGBT center and has a girlfriend!), but Callie should really be talking to Aaron himself. Surprise: Trans people aren’t a monolith, and one trans guy probably won’t be into the same stuff as the next. Ultimately, what has the potential to be a huge fight deescalates thanks to some eventual calm, clear communication on both sides, and although Callie and Aaron agree that neither of them is ready for sex yet, at least the lines of communication are now open for the future.
2. Jesus still has a long road to recovery.
Simply put, Jesus has a lot to worry about. There’s the impulsivity and aggression associated with his TBI. There are his emotions surrounding Emma’s abortion and their faltering relationship. There are Lena’s fears that she’ll “never get [her] sweet boy back.” There are ongoing tensions with Brandon. And there’s the impossibility of going back to school unless he agrees to have an educational aide accompany him to class. In The Fosters 5×04, Jesus and Emma finally have a serious conversation about her abortion, with Emma maintaining that it was her choice to make and urging Jesus to be true to his feelings rather than responding with what he thinks she wants to hear. This is a thorny issue, and The Fosters tackles it in a way that allows both characters to react authentically to the situation – even if that means their relationship won’t survive…
3. Mariana’s keeping it moving.
Or should we say “rolling”? After the Mariana-less robotics team wins a trophy and Emma all but kicks her out of STEAM Club, Mariana shakes it off and throws herself into roller derby. She doesn’t exactly take to it like a duck to water, but coach Ximena and the other members of the junior team encourage her to stick with it. In a particularly teachable moment, Ximena explains, “Falling is inevitable – the idea is to fall the right way.” Pretty soon, Mariana’s making friends and working hard to become a jammer. Now she just needs to figure out how to hide her bruises from Stef and Lena…
4. Brandon’s gotta Brandon.
Brandon makes a pretty huge breakthrough in The Fosters 5×04 by admitting to new girlfriend Grace that he “can sometimes be a bit of a caretaker” (ya think?) Of course, merely recognizing a pattern of behavior is very different from actually breaking it, and by the end of the episode, Brandon hops back on his white horse and invites ex-girlfriend Cort and her son Mason to stay in the Adams Fosters’ garage for the week.
Oh, and one more thing…
