Switched at Birth 5×03 certainly lived up to its name, “Surprise.” Read on for five things we learned during the episode.
1. Toby and Lily got married, then got honest.
When Toby, Lily, and baby Carlton visit from London for a surprise last-minute wedding, the cracks in their relationship are exposed in the middle of the ceremony. Happily, they’re able to talk things out, and agree to make some big changes. Toby’s going to get help for his gambling relapse, Lily’s going to go back to work for the UMKC Deaf Program, and the family is going to stay in Kansas City so the Kennish-Vasquez clan can help out with Carlton.
2. Mary Beth is dating Tank.
Yup, that Tank. Travis (a.k.a. Mary Beth’s ex and Bay’s current beau) juuust about stops short of actually murdering Tank, but he does tell Mary Beth that she’s a terrible person. Later, Tank tells Bay that Mary Beth had a rough time while Bay was in China – her mom had a stroke, and Tank helped her through it. Although Bay and Mary Beth miss each other, the future of their friendship seems uncertain to say the least.
3. Nobody cares about Luca dating Regina.
Regina’s prepared for resistance when she reveals her relationship with the much younger Luca, but the family surprises her. Both John and Daphne simply say her happiness is paramount, leaving her shocked – in a good way.
4. Luca’s not just a pretty face.
When John finds out that Luca was a combat medic, he tries to set him up with Daphne to help get Daphne’s mind off Mingo. Needless to say, that doesn’t work out, but Luca’s still able to help Daphne by suggesting she may have PTSD from nearly losing Bay to Japanese encephalitis in China. A tearful Daphne finally opens up about the guilt she feels for not listening when Bay first mentioned she didn’t feel well, and the family consoles her.
5. Daphne’s a minister!
In fact, she performs Toby and Lily’s wedding, sealing the deal with a dubious proclamation:
“By the power vested in me by the State of Kansas and getordained.com, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
