American Horror Story season 6 officially has its theme: Roanoke.
Read on to find out what happened during American Horror Story: Roanoke 6×02, “Chapter 2.”
The second episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke starts from exactly where we were left. The real Shelby, Matt, and Lee are telling their story from the studio of the documentary feature My Roanoke Nightmare, while we see a reenactment played by actors.
Shelby is lost in the woods when she stumbles upon a group of bad-looking torch-wielders headed by Kathy Bates’ character (did you spot Lady Gaga next to her?). They are busy enacting some sort of crazy ritual involving turning a man into a… pig-man. Only to burn him. Alive.
Poor Shelby runs away, and she faints just when Lee is about to hit her with her car in American Horror Story: Roanoke 6×02. Lee brings Shelby to the hospital, where Matt can finally talk with his wife. He tells her he wants to move far away from that farmhouse, but Shelby is not so sure anymore. On the contrary, she wants to fight whoever is putting on that “show” to scare them away. They invested all their money on that house, and she doesn’t want to succumb to some crazy farmers. Way to go, Shelby!
In the meantime, Lee has the great idea to invite her daughter to the farmhouse, sure that nothing can happen to her if she keeps her constantly in sight. But after she leaves little Flora alone for a while to cook lunch, Lee finds Flora talking to her new invisible (?) friend, Priscilla. Flora tells her mother her friend will make her a bonnet in exchange for help to stop “all the blood.” Right after, Lee hears a noise and finds a bonnet next to a shattered window.
That same night, Shelby hears a creepy noise coming from outside the farmhouse. American Horror Story: Roanoke 6×02 echoes every horror story when she decides to go out in the dark and investigate. Matt follows her, and they find a pig barbecue going on…
Matt and Shelby call the police, who promise they will investigate Ishmael Polk and his sons, who lost the farmhouse to Matt. Matt and Shelby will also have police protection outside the farmhouse.
Back in bed, the phone rings. As Matt answers, a woman begs for help and asks him why he’s letting them hurt her. Matt realizes that the phone’s cord is cut…
In the room next door, Matt sees an old woman named Margaret lying in a hospital bed, refusing to take the medicine a nurse is trying to give her. Another nurse comes in, ignoring Matt, and shoots the old lady in the head. The nurses are the same ones who briefly appeared to Shelby during last week’s episode, while she was exploring her new house. When Matt runs outside to call the cop who’s guarding the house, there’s no sign of the evil nurses.
As American Horror Story: Roanoke 6×02 continues, Lee’s former husband comes to pick Flora up, but the little girl is nowhere to be found. They finally trace her, hidden inside a closet. She claims she was talking to Priscilla again, trading her doll so Priscilla wouldn’t kill her and her parents. What a lovely friend Priscilla is! Flora’s dad runs away with his daughter, obviously upset, leaving an even more upset Lee behind. And that’s how Lee starts drinking again.
Together, Matt and Shelby see someone outside their house: A girl, dressed the same style of the crazy farmers. Outside, near where she was standing, they find a trapdoor. Once again, faithful to every horror story, they decide to go in and investigate. Why not?! Once in, they find a video camera and a tape. There’s a recording of a man who says he can’t live in the farmhouse anymore. He’s scared that whatever force inhabits that place is going to kill him.
The man is a professor named Elias Cunningham (Denis O’Hare) who came to the farmhouse because he was doing research for his next novel. The subjects of his research were two nurses, Miranda and Bridget Jane, sisters who worked and lived together. They were accused of the deaths of two elderly patients but left before they could have been charged. In fact, we learn in American Horror Story: Roanoke 6×02 that they moved to North Carolina, where they bought Shelby and Matt’s house. Before the two sisters arrived, the family living there suddenly disappeared, leaving all their possessions behind.
The sisters opened a facility for elderly people, only so they could kill them all. When police were called to investigate, the sisters were gone. The police found the dead bodies of the poor patients, and an unfinished word painted on a wall: murde. They tried to clean up the house for sale, but that word reappeared every time. Matt runs back inside the house and uncovers a wall, where he finds the word.
As the tape goes on, Elias says the official story is that the nurses left the farmhouse, but he is convinced that they never did. After all, they were stopped before they could complete the word on the wall. Elias is sure that something even more terrifying than the nurses got to them, something that’s in the house and everywhere around it. He says he wants to go back inside to try to find whatever it is. The tape continues from Elias’ point of view as he’s walking inside the house, but is abruptly interrupted.
Matt and Shelby are furious. They want the bank to give them their money back, but obviously things are not that simple. And if the situation weren’t bad already, Lee brings Flora home without Flora’s dad’s permission. Shelby manages to convince him not to call the police, but before her dad comes to pick her up, Flora disappears… again. This time, she isn’t hiding in the house. Shelby, Matt, and Lee start looking for her outside and find the little girl’s yellow hoodie hanging from the top of a tree.
What’s going to happen to Flora? Will our heroes be able to save her?
