Following the nail-biting season 1 finale that left Cameron’s life hanging in the balance, Kyle Harris and Emma Ishta will return to our screens Tuesday in Stitchers 2×01. We caught up with the dynamic duo to get the scoop on Kirsten’s newly accessible emotions, Cameron’s near-death experience, and what to expect from Stitchers season 2.
Emma, we found out a lot about Kirsten’s backstory in season 1, especially in the final episode. Her temporal dysplasia somewhat shielded her from the impact of finding all that out – how do we see her deal with what’s going on in season 2?
Emma Ishta: Well, I think throughout the course of last season, her temporal dysplasia was slowly fading away as she gained emotions with each stitch and each event that happened in her life. In season 2, because of the events of the season 1 finale, she doesn’t have temporal dysplasia anymore, so it all hits her pretty full-force. Throughout the season, we’ll watch her sort of struggle to figure out how to manage, how to keep ahold of herself and figure out who she is with all of these new things going on for her. Stitchers 2×01 is a continuation of the finale of season 1, so you’ll see a lot of stuff get wrapped up and a lot of questions answered.
Kyle, in Stitchers 1×10, Cameron voluntarily flatlined to prove that Kirsten should trust him and to get some answers about who’s after the stitch team. How does he come back from that in Stitchers 2×01, and how does the experience affect him?
Kyle Harris: When he comes out of it, [the stitch team members] don’t really get the answers they wanted, but at least they got their guy back and he’s alive. He definitely has a new outlook on life – he realizes that there’s nothing he can’t do now that he’s done the ultimate, and so he just kind of takes on life through a new lens. He realizes that we don’t have a guaranteed tomorrow, so he’s going to do whatever he wants to do right now and he’s going to say whatever he wants to say right now, take it or leave it! Sometimes that gets him in trouble and sometimes that puts a rift between him and Kirsten, but at the end of the day, he’s completely honest about every aspect of his life now. He comes to the forefront and just realizes, “Look, I did this for my team, and I’m gonna keep doing that and being this leader with Kirsten.” He’s not the backseat driver he was last season. Now they’re kind of seeing each other eye to eye with his newfound confidence.
That will be an interesting character development for him.
Kyle: Absolutely!

When Kirsten stitched into Cameron’s memories, she got a firsthand look at how important she is to him. What is she going to do with that confirmation in season 2, and how does that change the dynamic between them?
Emma: Well, she’s going to have to figure out how she feels, which is not an easy thing to do considering she’s never really had to manage her feelings in this way before – and they still have to work together, and they still have to see each other every day in that professional environment. They’re also still very good friends. Their friendship and understanding of one another certainly deepens throughout the course of the season, and we’ll see where else it goes.
Kyle: I think for Cameron, he knows that she knows, and he can only wait around so long for her to make that decision on what to do with that information.
Emma: Will he wait around or won’t he?
Kyle: Exactly!
Stitchers 2×01 is called “2.0,” which suggests some kind of upgrade or revamp. What changes can viewers expect this season?
Emma: The characters were all impacted by what happened last season, and they all grow in their own way. Another thing is that the show aesthetically is a different show. It looks beautiful. Our crew and our DP and all of our directors just did an incredible job this season, so it looks more grown-up. It looks like an older, better show. The cases are a little more intense and more complicated, and the relationships are more intense and more complicated. We up the ante this season!
Kyle: I would 100 percent agree with that. We all know where we stand now, and we all know what our role is in the program as well as in each other’s lives. We go forth from where we left off [with] that sophomore-year-in-the-program confidence that we all have. We’re not messing around this time – we’re taking names! And we advance to getting our actual NSA badges, so not only are we scientists, we’re also officially members of the NSA this season! We also start to do more field work, which I think is a fun, sexy element of the show.
There’s been a longstanding question mark about how the Halloween episode (Stitchers 1×11) fits into the timeline. Do we get an answer to that in season 2, and how does that process play out?
Kyle: In Stitchers 2×01…
Emma: …There’s a clue!
Kyle: There’s a bit of an Easter egg that, if you’re a fan, you’ll kind of pick up on.
Emma: It’s pretty early on in the first episode, yeah.
Kyle: So where the Halloween episode took place in the timeline will all make sense once you watch the first episode.
Emma: If you can figure out the clue, though! It’s tricky, but it’s there.
Kyle: It’s something to keep an eye out for!
