At the end of last week’s episode, Callie finally revealed her reasoning behind asking to live with Robert, and Stef vowed not to give up on her without a fight. The Fosters 2×19 opens with Lena, Stef, Callie and their lawyer trying to figure out ways to buy more time. It seems as if Callie asking Robert to request more time in front of the judge is their best option, but will Robert go for it? Read on for our full recap of The Fosters 2×19.
Assumptions & revelations
As Cierra Ramirez (Mariana) told us in an interview back in January, “Secrets don’t last long in the Foster family.” That assessment is reinforced in a bathroom scene during which Mariana reveals to Callie and Brandon that Jesus is going to boarding school and Lena and Stef are adopting Ana‘s baby. Jesus quickly steps in to set the record straight, assuring Callie and Brandon that boarding school isn’t a sure thing yet – and, once Mariana leaves the room, that the adoption isn’t going to happen.
Speaking of things that aren’t going to happen, Brandon is positive Stef and Lena won’t let him go on tour now that they know about his involvement in the kidnapping of Daphne‘s daughter, even though his moms haven’t actually said anything to that effect. It’s too late for him to accept his place at prestigious music school Idyllwild’s summer program – but the school is willing to create another spot for him if he auditions. The only problem is, he did his first audition before his hand injury, and he isn’t sure he’ll be able to perform as well this time around. While practicing piano at Mike‘s, Brandon runs into Ana, who’s upset because a letter got returned to her. Brandon does some snooping and finds out that she’s been trying to reconnect with her parents, but they aren’t interested.
Playing the hero
Lena, Stef, Callie and Robert appear before the judge to request that the 180-day waiting period is reenacted before a decision is made about where Callie will be living. Surprisingly, Robert is on board, but the judge orders that Callie should see Robert every other weekend in order to get to know him better. After they drop Callie off at school, Stef and Lena discuss what just happened.
Stef: My bet is that he wanted to play the hero for Callie’s benefit.
Lena: Well, now she’s going to have to spend every other weekend with him. Do you think it was really worth it?
Stef: Yes, because it bought us time.
Lena: For what?
Stef: To get Callie emancipated.
…Oh SNAP. Stef goes on to explain that if Callie gets emancipated, she’s no longer considered a ward of the state, so she wouldn’t need anyone’s consent to get adopted by the Fosters. Anchor Beach principal Monte then proceeds to interrupt at the worst time, but Stef invites her to dinner that night anyway.
So you think you can dance…
Remember the dance team Mariana and Tia founded after the bossy captain of their former dance team pushed them to the limit? They need four more dancers to be eligible to enter an upcoming competition, and it looks like they’re in trouble. Upon learning that Jesus’ ex-girlfriend and wrestling teammate Emma used to be a cheerleader, Mariana urges her to try out – but she’s shocked when Emma actually shows up. A bigger shock follows soon after when Callie appears. Emma rocks the audition, and Callie… not so much, but Mariana puts her on the team anyway. If there’s one thing I absolutely didn’t expect from The Fosters 2×19, it was seeing Callie perform a dance routine.
Following their long-awaited kiss in last week’s episode, Jude invites Connor to his house after school, and Connor accepts. When Jude goes to meet him, though, he sees Connor canoodling with girlfriend Daria. Ouch. Later, he asks if Connor is going to keep hanging out with her, and Connor says yes because it means he and Jude can spend time together without Connor’s dad on their backs. This is a dicey situation for poor Judicorn. Connor invites him to TP a house with Daria and her friend Taylor that night.
Over dinner, there’s some tension between Stef and Monte on account of Monte’s qualifications from prestigious schools, then Mariana brings up the subject of Timothy, whom Monte recently fired. The next day, Monte reinstates Timothy, Lena hugs her and they make plans for lunch.
Telling the truth
Also at dinner, Stef and Lena give Brandon hope that he may still be able to go on tour after all – but he still breaks the news to his bandmates that he can’t. Later, Brandon admits to Callie that the real reason he backed out of the tour is that he got an audition for Idyllwild. In turn, Callie admits that she doesn’t want to be on the dance team. They agree that if Brandon’s honest with the band about why he backed out of the tour, Callie will confess her feelings about the team to Mariana.
Meanwhile, the awkwardness between Stef and Monte only escalates when Monte unwittingly reveals how much Lena has confided in her by mentioning that Timothy was the donor for baby Frankie and that they’re now considering adopting Ana’s baby. After Monte leaves, Stef and Lena discuss the situation, and Stef ultimately smoothes things over with some wise words.
We can’t adopt Ana’s baby because we feel guilty. I don’t mind talking about this some more with you, I don’t, but what I do mind is not knowing what you’re thinking or feeling and hearing about it from another person outside this family before you share it with me. We have to tell each other everything. We’re in all of this together.
The next day, Lena and Stef head over to Mike’s apartment to tell Ana that they’ve decided to adopt her baby. Back at the Fosters’, Brandon tells Mariana that they won’t be adopting the baby. It seems like The Fosters 2×19 is all about crossed wires. Brandon suggests that Mariana reach out to her grandparents to see if they’d be interested in adopting their granddaughter.
As promised, Callie talks to Mariana about leaving the dance team, and Mariana takes it well, telling Callie she can always be honest with her. Brandon’s discussion with Lou goes less well and ends with Lou storming off.
Caught in the act
After Jude sneaks out for his TP-ing adventure, Lena wanders downstairs to research baby cribs online while everyone else is asleep. She soon gets waylaid by a folder that Stef’s been keeping for leverage, which contains some compromising photos of Robert and a mistress.
Lena: And this is why he was so willing to give Callie more time, because he’s having an affair and you blackmailed him? The end justifies the means?
Stef: I did what I had to do to protect our daughter, Lena, and I’m not gonna apologize for it.
Lena: So much for being in this together.
Back to Jude, Connor, Daria and Taylor, who almost get caught TP-ing the girls’ friend’s house. While Taylor and Jude are alone, she tries to kiss him, then tells him she knows he has a crush on Connor. The foursome end up heading back to Taylor’s place to “get drunk and make out.” Uhhh-oh.
Despite Taylor’s promises that her father is a light sleeper, he wakes up within two minutes and fires a gun at the intruders. Cut to Stef getting an early morning call…
