We left Callie in a sticky situation last week, and The Fosters 2×16 picks up where the previous episode left off. Read on for our full recap.
Daughters & sisters
After Callie is approached by the police in connection with the abduction of Daphne’s daughter, Robert‘s lawyer forbids Callie from answering any of their questions, and Robert makes her promise not to discuss the case with anyone. “I’m going to take care of this – and you,” he vows. That’s all well and good, but with Daphne’s first visitation coming up, what if little Tasha recognizes her…?
Meanwhile, in the ongoing Someone’s Little Sister tour saga, Lou has an idea to play a paid gig that will help cover the money Brandon needs to join his bandmates. One minor issue: They’ll be playing a pharm party. “Admission is $10 cash, plus a prescription pill, which they toss into a big bowl and pass around,” Mat explains as he and Brandon chat in the garage. Sounds… safe. Against Brandon’s wishes, Mariana‘s still angling to come along on the tour as well; she’s doing her part with an Indiegogo-esque online fundraiser and insists on coming to the gig.
#BabyFoster, part two?
Inside the house, Stef and Lena confront Mariana about telling Ana to give up her baby to the Fosters for adoption. They say they need to think about it, and Mariana points out that they took in Jude and Callie, so why not Mariana and Jesus‘ little sister? As Lena puts it, “Ouch.”
Stef: You wanted a baby.
Lena: I didn’t just want a baby, honey. I wanted the experience of being pregnant, of giving birth, and as horrible as I feel saying it, I wanted a child that was biologically a part of me.
Stef: That’s not horrible.
Lena: It’s not that I would have loved Frankie more, I just wanted what you have. All of it. Foster, adopted and biological children.
Stef: I understand. You don’t think I can, but I do. It’s just not the way it happened. And maybe whatever it is that controls our destiny, whether it’s fate, or God, or whatever, well, maybe it’s just opened a different door for us to walk through.
Speaking of different doors, Jesus speaks to a recruiter about an all-boys school that’s sports-focused and would cater to his learning style. The scene seems out of place in The Fosters 2×16 – until you get to the end of the episode.
As Callie begins volunteering at the youth center for foster kids introduced in The Fosters 2×13, Daphne has her first supervised visitation with her daughter. Tasha may not recognize her, but Tasha’s foster mom does and urges Daphne to stay away from Tasha if she really wants what’s best for her child. In a panic, Daphne considers leaving town, but Callie assures her there isn’t any evidence she was involved in the kidnapping – something she says she knows for a fact because the cops questioned her at the burger stand that morning. So much for not telling anybody. On her way home, Daphne gets stopped.
Hugs not drugs
At the pharm party, Mariana’s bemused by the lack of animals and the abundance of pills. While Brandon doesn’t partake of the drugs, Lou does because she likes to “take the edge off” before she plays, which definitely bodes well for the tour… or not. Mariana wanders off and accidentally gets locked in part of the warehouse, misses Someone’s Little Sister’s performance, and discovers a girl who must have chosen the wrong pill and is having a very serious reaction to it – namely, seizing and unconsciousness. Don’t do drugs, kids. Unable to get through to Brandon or Mat, who are performing, Mariana calls the cops and then Callie, the latter of whom rushes to the warehouse with Rafael, her boss from the youth center. Callie meets up with Mat and Brandon, but before they get the chance to search for Mariana, the cops bust the party.
Although Someone’s Little Sister don’t get arrested, they also don’t get paid. After Mariana storms off, Brandon fights with Lou about taking the pills and messing up a lyric while onstage as a result.
“That girl almost died! This could have been you! I don’t care that you forgot some words to a stupid song, I care that you took some freakin’ mystery pills and didn’t think about what would happen next. This is me caring, not judging.”
Lou eventually acknowledges that she was reckless and promises to stay sober on tour. Aw. I’ve never been a big Lou/Brandon fan (do they have a portmanteau?), but their exchange in The Fosters 2×16 was sweet, as was the hug they shared afterward.
Babies & bombshells
Speaking of sweet exchanges, Mat explains to Mariana why he doesn’t want her to come on the tour: “When you’re in the room, you have my undivided attention,” he tells her, then says he wants to focus on his music before life takes over.
Blissfully unaware of the goings-on at the pharm party, Stef and Lena try to make the most of a night to themselves, but it doesn’t quite go according to plan. They resolve to try to spend more time working on their relationship, especially given that all their kids except Jude will be going off to college in a couple of years – unless they take Ana’s baby, that is. After Jesus gets home, he broaches the subject with them, and they say they already have too much on their plates with five kids to look after plus Callie’s legal expenses. “What if you guys had one less kid to feed?” Jesus posits – and there it is.
As Rafael walks Callie to her door, he asks why the Fosters haven’t adopted her. She explains about her birth father, then admits she did something so bad she can’t look Stef and Lena in the eye anymore. He urges her to tell the truth, and she argues that it would ruin lives – and not just hers. Cut to Callie approaching Stef and Lena inside and telling them she thinks she should live with Robert.
Andddd The Fosters is once again brought to you by the letter “C” for “cliffhanger.” Tune in to ABC Family next Monday at 8/7c for the fallout.
