Alice Sungurov is the latest young artist we’re taking a listen to. The singer and songwriter is based out of the New York area and has just released her new track “So Blind” from HitPlay records. I’m always interested to hear what talented songwriters have up their sleeves.
When asked about her songwriting efforts, Alice revealed:
“Having my voice be heard inspires me to write. When I write music, I write a story. And then I hear lyrics come together with music and there is a moment where everything is paused, the feeling of content, the feeling of being complete. It is like reassuring myself that I know what I was meant to do.”
Alice Sungurov’s sound is described as a mix of Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Christina Perri. Personally, I hear more of a Taylor Swift sound mixed with 90s guitar bands.
Right off the bat, I am attracted to the strong guitar presence in the song. “So Blind” features a sound riff and a catchy hook that increases the promise behind the track. The obvious focus and story behind the original words are perhaps, a little lost.
The song is supported by a fun, colorful, and quirky video with animated elements. Vocally, it comes across a little disjointed and rushed. The rushed style of the song has the negative effect of struggling to understand the lyrics that we were so eager to embrace at first. I am left wondering how much a listener could be blown away by the lyrics of a slower ballad. I think there is definite promise there.
However, her fun energy and obvious stage presence makes you eager and curious for what else she has to offer from whatever other projects she decides to work on or release.
It is also extremely obvious that this is one talented 15 year old. At the age of four, she was diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder. She has overcome her impediment and is now a role model of confidence for listeners. With a talent in so many areas and instruments, there’s plenty for listeners to look forward to.
