Last week’s episode centered on the party thrown in Stef and Lena‘s absence, leaving some other issues on the back burner. This week, The Fosters 2×04 made up for that with drama, romance and surprises. Read on for our recap of The Fosters 2×04, “Say Something”:
The Fosters 2×04 opens with the family clearing out the garage to make a band practice space for Brandon. They come across a child’s bike that Lena says they should keep for the baby because “she’s got to start somewhere.” Surprise: Lena’s going to have a girl!
Meanwhile, Callie finally tells Jude about the letter from her half-sister, Sophia. She may have only one parent in common with both Sophia and Jude, but she tells Jude that she views Sophia as her half-sister while Jude is her “brother, period.” She offers not to meet Sophia if Jude doesn’t want her to, but he says it’s her choice.
The following day, Connor approaches Jude at school to try to explain why he lied about telling his dad he was going to the party at the Fosters’. Jude ignores him, and also refuses to speak in class later that day.
Weed-whackers & GEICO lizards
Remember Hayley, the girl from Mariana‘s dance team with whom Jesus hooked up at the party? When Jesus fails to call her, she goes to Mariana, who urges him to treat her right.
“I’m not gonna let you be some douche who, like, mows through girls faster than Mom’s weed-whacker. Call her.”
Hayley visits the house under the guise of hanging out with Mariana, then heads upstairs with Jesus. Downstairs, Jesus’ ex, Emma, comes to the door. Mariana lies and says Jesus isn’t home.
In other dance team news, the troupe’s audition process brings up some old concerns for Mariana – namely, that she only made the team because she was Latina. Hayley admits that Mariana’s selection was strategic, but not due to her race. With all the cutbacks occurring at the school, the dance team wanted the acting principal’s daughter as a member to ensure they wouldn’t lose their funding. In probably the most brilliant line of the episode, Mariana says, “Great, so I’m the GEICO lizard of the dance team.”
The trouble with Timothy
Back at Anchor Beach, the election committee is about to make its final decision on the new principal. Timothy – Lena’s colleague and sperm donor – chooses the day before Lena’s interview to tell her he’s hired an attorney to fight for his parental rights. The interview goes well in spite of Timothy asking some tough budgetary questions and bringing up Lena’s pregnancy. Afterward, Lena scolds him for his lack of integrity.
When Lena doesn’t get the position, Timothy apologizes for his actions, telling her that her interview was impressive but the committee decided to bring in “new blood.” He also hands her an envelope. When she opens it later, she finds he signed the donor agreement after all.
As Lena’s dealing with Timothy, Stef takes Callie to visit the Quinns and meet her half-sister. Callie goes up to Sophia’s room, which is filled with trophies, and Sophia reveals that her parents pressure her to succeed. They also talk about Wyatt, who declared his love for Callie earlier in the episode. Callie admits to Sophia that she loves him too but hasn’t said it back because she feels it would be a betrayal to Brandon.
While the girls are upstairs, Robert explains to Stef that his parents thought Callie’s mom was a gold digger and pressured him to get his marriage dissolved. He offers to set up a college fund for Callie, saying he feels he owes her.
When Stef gets home, Lena presents her with the signed donor contract from Timothy, but Stef’s experience meeting the Quinns has given her a different perspective on parental rights.
“Would it be a bad thing? Timothy – letting him be a part of the baby’s life, not as a father but as a donor and a friend. I just, I saw how Callie was so taken with Robert and Sophia, and I get it, you know, everyone wants to know their history, and are we really going to keep that a secret from our child? As long as he’s not asking to be a dad, isn’t a little more love and support a good thing?”
Love, letting go… & a twist
When Brandon’s bandmate, Lou, expresses an interest in reworking “Outlaws” (which you can buy here on the U.S. iTunes) to better fit the band’s vibe, he is initially reluctant and asks Callie for permission. Callie says the decision isn’t up to her because he wrote it. He counters that he wrote it for her, to which Callie responds, “Let Lou have the song.”
We get the sense that the conversation is about more than just the song itself, and the next scene that takes place between Callie and Wyatt confirms this. She finally tells him she loves him too, and the two kiss on the porch.
The kiss would be the perfect ending, but on this show, there’s always another crisis lurking around the corner. The Fosters 2×04 is no exception to the rule. Following a call from school about how Jude refused to speak in class, Stef, Lena and Callie all try to coax him into revealing what’s wrong – to no avail.
