This week’s new episode of The Mentalist, Silver Wings Of Time, begins with a boom! Literally.
The FBI team is called to investigate when a bomb kills a man at a bus stop.
It appears that whoever set the bomb didn’t want a carnage, but had a precise target.
The bomb’s victim is David Ronaldo. He is connected to an old murder. 14 years ago a woman, Sarah Feinberg, was killed by Luis Cruz, who’s been on death row for the past 11 years. Ronaldo thought Cruz was innocent, and he’s been trying to get him exonerated.
Jane and the team think that he was killed because he was close to find something that would have helped Cruz.
They all start to investigate the case. They manage to identify the man who put the bomb at the bus station, only to
find him dead.
They have only 50 hours before Cruz will be executed.
Jane and Lisbon talk to the Sarah’s husband, Edward Feinberg who was Cruz’s psychiatrist.
Edward is now married with Mae, a former Edward’s student. Jane accuses Edward of his former wife Sarah’s murder, and says he and Mae were already having an affair before Sarah was killed.
Jane sets up one of his plans. The FBI arrests Edward under false pretences, and they keep him overnight under their custody. Mae is with him. After a whole night of interrogations, during which the team tries to make Edward confess the murder of his wife, the next morning they learn from the news on tv that Cruz has
been executed.
Mae seems releaved, while Edward says to Jane that Cruz’s execution doesn’t make him feel any better. Jane believes him, he believes Edward didn’t kill his wife. He believes that Mae did it, so she could marry Edward.
And in fact, while alone, Mae confess the murder of Sarah to Edward, and she’s arrested.
We also learn that Cruz hadn’t been excuted yet (it was all part of Jane’s plan), so the FBI team manages to save the man’s life.
At the end of the episode, while Jane is resting on his couch, Lisbon appears in a beautiful black dress, ready to go out for a date with Agent Pike. Jane looks at her go away, once again alone.
This episode was all about the importance of time, and how precious it is, when a man’s life is at stake, or when
you’re watching the woman you care about go away from you.
There’s an interesting parallelism between Edward and Jane. Edward said that after years of grieving his wife’s death, he finally pulled himself out of it.
That is what’s happening to Jane, too. He’s starting to live again, he’s trying to find his path in this new life. And he’s seeing Lisbon living her life too, probably too scared to make a move with her, scared to love again.
But time waits for no one, and Jane will have to do something before it’s too late.
A new episode of The Mentalist will air next Sunday, April 20.
