A Finn-heavy Nationals episode gives us the very best Glee has to offer this season. Plus, the game-changing ending that will probably reverberate through the rest of this season and oodles more. Check out this week’s Glee highlights!
10. The random reference to Rory
Yes, our long-lost Irish fave Rory was briefly mentioned in the “here’s what you missed on Glee” segment at the beginning. One can only hope the random mention will lead to something more as Glee continues in its final two seasons.
9. Mercedes and her Faux-huahua
Mercedes has always been a pretty underused character, so it was nice to see her step into the spotlight a bit in this episode. Her absence was definitely noticed, and she brings a nice aura about her to nationals. Her appearance with that Faux-huahua is definitely going to leave a lasting impression on the world of show-choir championships. Mercedes lives on!
8. Jean-Baptiste’s FLIPPIN’ AMAZING mashup of Mr. Roboto / Counting Stars
It’s no wonder Throat Explosion won nationals with a performance like that. It was da bomb.
7. Mercedes giving Marley advice
Diva to diva, Mercedes gave aspiring songwriter Marley some sound tips on how to not give up on her dreams. Has girlfriend really not learned this by now? The moment between Marley and Mercedes doesn’t feel forced at all and comes off as a very genuine moment. I missed Marley!
6. Jake’s abs
Yes, I had to donate a moment to Jake’s abs because, why not. He’s beautiful.
5. Carole’s speech
Carole’s little talk about how Finn would have felt about Nationals was very touching, and the words really rang true. It felt as if Finn was vicariously channelling himself through her and it hurt.
4. Carole’s breakdown
Carole Hudson was the shining light of this episode, bringing so many heartbreaking scenes to life. Give her an Emmy now, PLEASE! Burt and Carole are perfect together, and that moment when Tina leaves and Carole has the breakdown makes for some really compelling television. I could almost feel Carole’s heartache over Finn.
3. The way Jean-Baptiste says “Throat Explosion” and sasses all over the stage
Seriously, Glee. Can we make Skylar Astin a regular? Please? Did I mention how amazing Skylar Astin was?
2. Sue announcing the end of New Directions
It was a sad but tender moment between now-Principal Sue and Will. After Roz wheeled out her trophy, it was only a matter of timing as to when Sue would announce the end of New Directions. The end of an era has arrived, and yet we still have another season to go.
1. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
This whole sequence was really powerful. The Finn tribute episode spared us the painful flashbacks, but somehow this scene uses the flashbacks in a tender way. It captures the spirit of Finn and, even more importantly, of Cory Monteith. The moment with the drumsticks was the capper on a lovely tribute. It was lovingly crafted and very powerful. Even if New Directions didn’t win, Finn would have been proud.
“You didn’t lose, William. Game’s just over.”
