Vampires and werewolves and witches, oh my! It’s another week of “The Originals”.
And we’re kicking it off with another resurrection – Monique Devereaux wakes up in her coffin, panicking as she tries to get out. In town, Father Kieran is giving a sermon in the newly reopened church where Klaus, Marcel and Cami are being good little churchgoers with no ulterior motives whatsoever. In the cemetery, Sabine/Celeste – or let’s just call her Celeste now – is giving her city tour to a group of out of towners when the Devereaux memorial suddenly explodes and out bursts Monique.
After mass, Klaus cuts to the chase with Kieran asking if the human faction has seen Papa Tunde anywhere. The answer’s no, and then Cami promptly interrupts to formally congratulate her uncle and then leaves. A call from Diego beckons Klaus back to the compound after the body of Papa Tunde turns up. Looks like their witch problems are even bigger now.
Once Klaus and Marcel leave, Kieran continues to shake hands with the rest of the churchgoers, until one of the witches Celeste brought back – Bastiana – shakes his hand and places a hex on him. At the compound, the company gathers around Tunde’s body, trying to decipher the meaning of it. Rebekah waltzes up to announce Monique’s resurrection, thinking that perhaps if you kill the witches resurrected, the intended girls will rise. Hayley joins in shortly thereafter taking credit for Elijah’s findings in Davina’s drawings and creates a theory that one of the witches must be Celeste. Duh. Klaus decides this is war being declared.
Elijah begs Rebekah to bring Hayley to the Plantation to keep her safe. Because, you know, just keeping her down the road in town totes keeps her safe. Smart thinking, Lij. He’d do it himself but he doesn’t want to be the hypocrite she called him last episode. So she agrees, if only to end their quarrel. Marcel interrupts her mission, however, warning her that he saw one of the witches at the church – Genevieve. And apparently they both know she has unfinished business and secrets that they don’t want getting out. So she sends him to take care of Genevieve while she upholds her promise to Elijah.
Genevieve stops by the bar asking Cami for tea when Kieran shows up, wanting her to hear him out. He tells her about the hex placed on him, same as her late brother’s, and doesn’t know how long he has. He wants her to promise to get as far away as possible when it gets bad, but Cami is always in denial about everything. Fortunately, Genevieve has a solution. She gives Cami Papa Tunde’s blade to stab Klaus in the heart with, and then she’ll remove the hex. I mean, I know Cami hates him, but come on…
Doing as she’s told, Rebekah drops Hayley at the planation where it becomes clear that she’s setting up for a party for her wolf family. Being that it’s a full moon, they’ll be human for the one night. Sidenote: Turns out pregnant werewolves don’t turn. Elijah pays a visit to Sabine to ask for help, and she’s reluctant, so he asks her to take him on a walk for one of her famous tours. In the interim, Sophie’s trying to take care of Monique but the girl is seriously off. She has to confess to her the death of her mother, JaneAnne. And then she asks Sophie if she still has faith in their magic. Sophie says she lost it but realized if she didn’t believe, she’d be letting Monique down so she tried to get it back. Marcel stops by to ruin the moment, still talking about trying to get Davina back. One track mind, much? He gets Sophie to do a locator spell to find the witches, but she wants a deal. If she goes against them, she’ll be on their hit list so she’ll need to get herself and Monique out of town and for that, she’ll need money. Marcel’s happy to oblige, so long as she finds the witches.
In the pews of the church, Cami waits for Klaus to come to her uncle’s aid. They have a small heart to heart about how he knows she hates him but Kieran is a good man with a loyal heart and his lies were just to protect her. He says the attack on Kieran should be proof witches are the enemy. So, naturally, instead of stabbing him, she gives the blade over to him. Later on, when Kieran comes down from his hideaway in the attic, Klaus offers to try to compel him to fight the hex. But first he has to be drained of vervain, then drink Klaus’ blood from the chuch chalice.
Klaus: “A vampire is trying to reverse a witch’s hex placed on you, and it’s the cup you find sacreligious.
Hayley starts hanging clothes on the line for her soon-to-be-human pack when the wolf who’s constantly watching her shows up. Rebekah is inside…cooking? Oh my god, Julie Plec what are you DOING to the Original family?! A very human and very naked male pack member named Oliver walks into the kitchen, obviously checking her out. And Rebekah can’t take her eyes off…of him. Ahem. She’s flustered and blushing by the time she calls for Hayley. Soon, the party is hopping. Oliver manages to get Rebekah to dance with him while Hayley is approached by another wolf, Jackson. He’s the same one that’s been looking out for her, and it turns out they’re different bloodlines but their destinies were intertwined, in the form of an arranged marriage. Ha. Don’t tell Elijah that…
Speaking of the third party, Elijah and Sabine on their tour and he finally calls her out on being Celeste. How did he know? Well if the Davina drawings weren’t enough, the fact that there was no magic in her remains was a helpful hint. Not to mention how well “Sabine” managed to execute the conclusion of the Harvest. To what end is this game she’s playing? She answers him with a very steamy kiss, but once she pulls away he starts to get all woozy. It’s a simple enchantment that weakens him. She’s pissed that he stood by Klaus after he basically sentenced her to death because of his “always and forever” vow. She says the vow was the greatest mistake of his life, and she will have her revenge – starting with Klaus.
But Rebekah will soon be at risk too, which leaves Hayley unprotected. So once he recovers, he’ll only have time to save one. I admit, clever plot twist. But I’m not liking the odds here…
Klaus finishes draining Kieran and gives him the chalice of his blood. He then compels him that he will overcome what the witches did, resist the dark urges of their hex. Did it work? Nope. So Klaus sets off to see the wizard. I mean witch. Too bad Sophie is too weak and can’t find the witches. No matter. Klaus’ll just take Monique and use her as leverage. Bye! He brings her into the centre of the Quarter, calling out the witches and saying he’ll kill her if they don’t appear. Marcel comes up, objecting, which is hypocritical since he killed Monique’s mother, as Klaus points out. But Marcel is serious. He wrestles Tunde’s blade out of Klaus’ grips and they brawl until Klaus snaps his neck. And when he turns around, Sophie’s there to stab him with the blade! Oh no! The blade suddenly sinks all the way into him on it’s own and he screams out in agony then drops to the ground. Bastiana appears to collect.
Jackson allows Hayley a few minutes to take in the new information and continues to tell her the Crescent pack aren’t just a pack of wolves. They go back to the very beginning. Their families were the first two families, kind of like royalty. Okay, if they were the first two bloodlines, whose is Klaus descended from ’cause I call incest! He firmly believes she’ll break their curse, and knows it from her witch friend. Wait, what witch friend? Oops. Out in the woods, Rebekah and Oliver are tangoing tongues when he has to back away and fulfill his end of the deal. Whuuut? She’s suddenly surrounded by wolves. No bueno!
Amidst all the havoc, Celeste, Bastiana and Genevieve are lighting candles and chanting. Elijah stirs and gets a call from Hayley saying something is up. He tells her they’re in danger, Celeste is back and to find Rebekah. But she doesn’t get the chance because the plantation goes up in flames, thanks to the witches. It spreads quick and I’m sorry I laughed at the over dramatization of Phoebe Tonkin’s choking. Jackson tries to help her but wait for it… Elijah bursts in to save her! Really, Elijah? Really?! Not even your own family. And Jackson is still in there so what does he do instead of running out to help Rebekah!? He wastes two minutes gazing at Hayley and runs in to save her would-be-fiance! Okay, I must pause for a moment because I feel a rant coming on. Feel free to skip it if you are a fan of Hayley and/or Haylijah.
Just bear with me. Faced with the decision of Klaus, Rebekah, and Hayley, who does he choose to save? Hayley. Am I surprised? Not really. Am I pissed? Hell yes. Elijah Mikaelson, the devoted family man. The “noble” one. Except his choice is not noble at all, because choosing anything over family is generally messed up. Granted, there are circumstances where it can be understandable to shun your family, but looking at the Original family from “The Vampire Diaries” and on? The one constant in all of their lives is FAMILY. Even Kol was still loyal to his family, in his own way. They have always been about one another, and “The Originals” has warped that into something completely different. Okay, realistically, yes Klaus has abused his relationship with Elijah. But Rebekah didn’t. Yet she continuously gets crapped on for trying to be good and live her own life, and create her own happiness. As for Klaus, every time he daggered his brother, it was with a purpose or for safety, or because what had to be done had to be done, and Elijah’s judgement would get in the way. And this isn’t my bias because I am a Klaus fan because I am an Originals fan first and foremost (or I used to be) and I love them ALL. But I can say confidently that there are some things that needed to play out as Klaus saw them fit, but Elijah’s moral code just wouldn’t call for it. That’s why Klaus must always take on the role of the bad brother, doing what they couldn’t and shouldn’t, to spare the rest of them the anguish. But I digress. And no, I’m not negating how unfair it is what Klaus may have done to Elijah by any means. But Elijah the “noble one” Mikaelson abandoning his family for an orphaned whore who just sucks in general? I get it. He apparently has a thing for damsels in distress, hence doing his badass thing and swooping in to the rescue by ripping hearts out (a la Sophie in 1×1). But come on! What romantic development has there been? I mean, really! They have nothing in common and there is no basis for his so called “love” for her because it was all stemming from his need to protect this child. So somewhere in offscreensville we’re supposed to believe they somehow just developed feelings for one another? It wasn’t like there was suddenly a major breakthrough that brought them close – no, the fever in Bayou was barely anything, so shut up – and basically, their relationship, if you could call it that, is so very manufactured by terrible writing and forced acting. I’m sorry but I will never back his decision to save her and I will never accept that this Elijah is the same Elijah we first met 3 years ago in “The Vampire Diaries”. As far as I’m concerned, that Elijah is dead.
And speaking of dead, let’s get back to the recap where Rebekah is lying practically dead on the forest floor all bloodied and battered. Not so luckily, Genevieve is there to retrieve her. Elijah shows up to find her but too little too late, faux noble one. Instead he finds the three witches – Celeste, Genevieve and Bastiana who all can’t be touched because they have their respective leverage. And somewhere Rebekah and Klaus are both suffering, all because he chose to save the wolfslut.
Celeste: “I guess always isn’t forever after all.”
Bitch… So now, Jackson has to go wolf again now that the party’s over but not before Hayley can thank him for protecting her. She promises she won’t stop until she finds a way to break their curse. What-ever wolfbitch. Cami’s trying to reach Klaus, desperate to save her uncle, but Bastiana appears to explain Klaus is indisposed at the moment, and too bad she didn’t complete her task because now Uncle Kieran will have to die. Next time don’t oppose the witches. And by the way, we’re gonna rise again.
Back at the compound, Diego tells Marcel they can’t find Klaus and Elijah storms in in a hissy fit, probably stemming from his GUILT of not saving him himself. (We’re in a fight, Elijah.) He reveals to Marcel that Rebekah is missing too, and everyone is to help find them. Meanwhile, Sophie’s trying to get her niece out of town but Monique goes all super witch on her and starts making Sophie bleed through her eyes and nose, disappointed by her aunt’s lack of faith in the Harvest. Sophie begs through mouthfuls of blood but Monique runs off to join the witchy cult and leaves her aunt for dead. Aw…but I really did like her!
The Originals returns Tuesday, February 25th!
