Person of Interest meets National Treasure. All this episode needed was a little of Nicolas Cage and his hair.
Read on for our recap of season 3 episode 14 of Person of Interest: “Provenance“.
John (Jim Caviezel) is finally back in New York and he’s got a fresh, new suit for his first day back on the job. Go Team! But I have to say, I’m missing the stubble.
The latest number is Kelly, a party planner with all the right connections. It’s pretty clear right off the bat that this girl is not who she says she is. John and Harold (Michael Emerson) attend one of her parties (as a couple! Rinch!) and before long, it starts to go down. Shaw walks in on John and Harold attempting to tie a bowtie and utters this gem: “I hate to interrupt this wildly erotic moment…”
Some dry ice bombs interrupt the event and someone steals a pricey artifact. Shaw (Sarah Shahi) attempts to stop the thief, only to discover that it’s actually Kelly. Finch is able to uncover that she is a former Chinese Olympic gymnast that was cut from the team. She went from a professional athlete to a criminal.
She may not be all bad. They soon realize that Kelly is being blackmailed. Some thugs have her daughter and she’s being forced to repay a debt. When she was young and pregnant, she stole from their pawn shop to feed her daughter. She’s been working for them ever since.
Her latest heist includes stealing a very valuable bible. Thanks to our team’s interference, she wasn’t successful. They think that the only way to help save her daughter would be to steal the bible themselves. I smell a familiar movie plot!
Seriously. Everything that happens from here on out is almost exactly like National Treasure. If you just replaced Jim with Nicolas Cage and the bible with the Declaration of Independence, it would be the same.
Lionel Fusco (Kevin Chapman) steals some fingerprints so Harold can make a 3D hand to get past a fingerprint scanner. John then creates a diversion so the bible is moved to another room that the girls can get inside. Harold then plays a loop for the security cameras so they are undetected.
Thanks to some kick-ass gymnastics from Kelly (and all while in leather pants), she is able to give the bible to her thugs. Unfortunately, they are not interested in ending their blackmail scheme anytime soon. John has other ideas. He just so happens to get halfway around the world to find Kelly’s daughter. He rescues her and Shaw shoots some kneecaps.
The team settle in for drinks as the episode ends and they toast what a great team they are together. Not wanting Carter (Taraji P. Henson) to be forgotten, John raises his glass to her. I miss her so much!
For a first episode back, I’m not sure how much I enjoyed this one. I loved seeing the team back together but as a plot, it felt pretty weak…and all too familiar. It’s not a huge highlight in an otherwise fantastic season.
