The preview for this week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars promised big things. Did the writers finally deliver?
Read on for our recap of episode 4×16 of Pretty Little Liars: “Close Encounters“.
Spencer is understandably feeling a rush of emotions this week. She’s still not trusting her father who finally confides in her one of the reasons he’s been sketchy. Jason, who is apparently still alive, is in rehab. He fell off the wagon and Mrs. Dilaurentis didn’t want anything to trigger him. Over in the Toby plot that refuses to end with no real meaning..Toby is getting a settlement from Radley. In order to receive his money, he has to agree to never talk about Radley to anyone ever again. Spencer doesn’t want him to sign it because she believes her father is still hiding something. She snoops through his briefcase and discovers that Jessica Dilaurentis is on the Board of Trustees. Toby is so over it. And so are we. He wants to move on and he signs the papers.
Hanna doesn’t have much to do this week. She plays pool, makes out with Travis, and throws some plates with her mom. Like for real. They go somewhere and pay to throw and shatter plates. Is this really a thing? Do these places exist? That’s one way to get your rage out but it seems so wasteful to me.
Jake is back in town and he’s happy to see Aria. Too bad the feeling isn’t mutual. Aria has told Ezra that he’s “The One” and then she breaks up with Jake. Later on, Jake catches Ezra in a violent rage, screaming at a blonde woman in a car. He yells that she “really messed up” and he’s so furious over the mistake that he punches her car while she’s still in it. Damn, son.
Jake lets Aria know about this and reveals he always thought she was afraid of Ezra. Aria confronts Ezra about this and he claims that it was Maggie’s lawyer he was yelling at but are any viewers buying this? Just as I’m worrying that Ezra is plotting Jake’s demise, Jake is injured. “Someone” places knives inside his punching bag. Ouch!
Who else is back tonight? Shana. Get ready for the writers to completely backtrack on her story. Apparently Shana grew up with Alison since she was 3 years old. Alison asked her to come to Rosewood to see who was trying to kill her. Jenna was on this list. Shana was just using Jenna. Ugh. Shana has a message for Emily. Alison wants to meet her. Alone. Emily asks Shana to prove that she’s speaking with Alison and she is able to repeat the conversation Emily had with Ali at the barn. “I miss you the most.”
Emily is more than a little excited to meet up with her former love. She’s wearing a short skirt and some lipstick. Too bad she never brings pepper spray. Her mom worked for the police after all. Alison actually shows up this time and apologizes for everything she did to Emily. She claims she knows she can trust Emily but she isn’t sure about the other girls. Emily asks her to tell who she’s running from but Alison isn’t sure. She thought she knew but she was wrong. Before we can get anything else out of her, Spencer has to show up to ruin the party.
Emily is pissed. Alison is betrayed and runs away and Emily is so mad at Spencer for ruining this.
Will Alison ever reach out to her again? Is this the beginning of Spencer unraveling?…again? Who was Ezra yelling at and why? Is Alison playing games with their hearts?
