Switched at Birth is back and better than ever! Season 3 began tonight on ABC Family as the families pick up after the events of the season 2 finale.
Read on for our recap of the season 3 premiere “Drowning Girl“.
The girls are beginning their senior year of high school and things are looking a little different than usual. Following the events of last season, the girls have managed to keep Carlton open, but at a price. Hearing kids have indeed infiltrated the school but it’s a new crowd. Three other under-performing schools have been dumped at Carlton and now there are security guards, fights around every corner, and tires being slashed.
This is exceptionally problematic for Bay, who is seeing her art class disappear. Melody suggests taking an art course at a local college for credit instead. This is looking like an awesome experience for Bay, who has been nursing a broken heart for the past couple of weeks. Her teacher is Sandra Bernhard and her classmate, Tank (played by Max Adler), is adorable. When Bay gets drunk at a frat party, he stops her from making the wrong decisions.
Daphne begins her senior year with an extra curricular activity: community service. This would suck on its own but the stress is doubled thanks to John freezing her out. While volunteering at a local free clinic, Daphne meets a fellow volunteer named Campbell (played by RJ Mitte). Campbell is paralyzed and offers her a ride home, and no, not on his lap. Sheesh, Daphne! Campbell is very charming. “Look at us. A gimp and a deaf girl. We sound like the beginning of a really bad joke.”
Katie LeClerc steals the episode when her character breaks down to Toby, thinking that John will never forgive her. Wanting to earn back his love, Daphne attempts to bring back the basketball team. She is, unfortunately, unsuccessful. Newly married Toby, who is sitting around playing video games while his wife is in Peru, offers to help coach a field hockey team with her. That could be fun! But how long will John be mad at his daughter?
The parents are struggling in the episode as well. Kathryn decides to go to therapy because she’s not happy. I kid you not, within 5 minutes, the guy writes her a prescription. Was he even listening to her? Maybe she just needed someone to talk to. She finds this person in new recurring cast member Alec Mapa. Together, they join a dance class and talk about hula hoops. He is my spirit animal.
Constance Marie promised me that Regina was going to finally be happy this season. So far, she’s having a bad day. When Regina’s boss announces she’s moving to London and selling her business, Regina is out of a job. Bay convinces her to buy the business with Angelo and live out her dream. Angelo, however, is hiding his own money problems and acts like a total wiener to Regina. How long will it be before that gets out? It’s giving me anxiety!
