The three retreat to the abandoned apartment across the hall, where Nick puts on a horrible homemade Batman cowl to “get inside Keaton’s mind” and e-mails Schmidt an inspirational message. But while answering the door to a group of trick-or-treaters, Schmidt follows the e-mail chimes and finds his roommates at the computer typing responses.
Later that night, Jess (dressed as “Joey Ramona Quimby”), Nick (who just piled on trash from his car), and Winston (dressed as a really poor David Letterman) are surprised to find that Schmidt (dressed as a “public serpent”) has decided to take the piss out of his scheming roommates, and tells them that re-reading some of Keaton’s e-mails inspired him to come to the party after all. In a panic, Jess sends Winston to Cece’s house to stall her while she and Nick nearly ruin the scheme by telling Schmidt to meet Michael Keaton outside.
A slightly drunk Jess decides to co-opt a child’s Batman costume and tries to disguise herself as Keaton on the street, to an obvious failure. Schmidt confesses that he’s known about their tricks–butonly believes that they hacked into Michael Keaton’s account. Nick finally admits that he and Mrs. Schmidt were Michael Keaton the whole time. Cece shows up at the last minute, and they awkwardly cross paths.
While Jess talks Cece down (and Cece reveals that looking Schmidt in the eye finally gave her closure, Nick and Schmidt have a heart-to-heart about their friendship. “You don’t need Keaton–you’ve got me,” says Nick, and Schmidt accepts his apology.
The next day, Schmidt decides that it’s time to make a new life for himself away from the roommates, and so they bid him goodbye–for his move to the empty apartment across the hall.
