In this new episode of The Mentalist, Red Listed, Jane (Simon Baker) and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) are called to a crime scene by FBI agent Reede Smith (Drew Powell). The brutally tortured body of a man has been found in Sacramento, and this man is linked to a past CBI case.
The man’s name is Benjamin Marx, and Jane buried him alive in order to make him confess a murder he committed.
Smith is immediately suspicious and thinks Jane killed him. Jane points out that the man was tortured to death, which means that whoever killed him wanted to gain informations from him. Smith calls Homeland Security Agent Robert Kirkland (Kevin Corrigan) to inform him about the new case.
Later, Jane and Lisbon discuss the case and Jane admits that he planted a fake list of Red John suspects because he thought someone was spying on him since a long time, and indeed someone then stole the fake list. Whoever did it is looking for Red John too. Jane and Lisbon suspect that the FBI is behind this, but the
only way to be sure about it is to ask former CBI boss Madeline Hightower (Aunjanue Ellis).
Jane gives to Lisbon the fake list, so that with the team she can put the men under protection. They are all people the team already knows, being part of past cases.
Meanwhile, Jane learns that Hightower died in a car accident with her kids during a vacation. He decides to visit Hightower’s aunt Ruby, and leaves a message on a website created in memory of Hightower.
The message is received, and Jane and Hightower secretely meet. Madeline is not dead, but because she feared to be Red John’s next victim, she faked her death in order to protect herself and her kids.
Hightower reveals to Jane that the FBI cut a deal with former CBI boss Virgil Minelli, who had to inform them and Homeland Security about his every move. Homeland Security believed that Jane was Red John.
Meanwhile, Lisbon tries to convince one of the fake suspects, Richard Haibach (William Mapother) to accept the CBI’s protection, but the man refuses. When Lisbon is back at his house, with the FBI, Haibach is gone. We learn that Homeland Security’s Robert Kirkland has kidnapped him, and he’s ready to torture him in order to find out if he is Red John.
Kirkland asks agent Smith to meet him, and he asks him if he knows something about a secret organization that involves the California Law Enforcement: FBI, CBI. This organization helps them cover their dirt, as Kirkland says, to protect eachother. Its code words are: Tiger, Tiger. The same words Red John whispered to Jane, the same words several men killed by Red John whispered before they died. Smith says he knows nothing about such organization, and Kirkland seems to believe him, and asks for his help to try to unveil this organization.
With the informations he got from Hightower, Jane pays a visit to Kirkland later, and he tells him that the list of Red John suspects he has stolen from him is fake. Kirkland then forces Jane to go with him to a cabin in the woods, where Haibach is hidden.
He explains to Jane the reason why he wants to catch Red John. His brother Michael got involved with Red John, after a past of abuses by their father that eventually got him to become an alcoholic.
Kirkland is sure Red John killed his brother, and he wants to know the real list of Red John suspects from Jane, who refuses to reveal the names.
Meanwhile, Hightower is worried about Jane’s safety and she calls Lisbon, who doesn’t know about Jane’s meeting with Hightower and didn’t know she was still alive. They meet, and they find out where Jane is kept by Kirkland. They arrive just in time to save him from being tortured by the Homeland Security Agent.
Kirkland is arrested by the FBI. The last minutes of this episode are very important. We see Kirkland being transfered to a prison. But the car in which he’s in is stopped by FBI agent Smith, who reveals to Kirkland that he
is indeed part of the organization he talked about. He forces him out and tells him to run. Smith takes the gun of the security guard who’s driving the car and kills Kirkland. He tells the guard what he’ll have to say, that Kirkland tried to escape and he [the guard] had to kill him. Smith then pronounces the well known words: Tiger, Tiger to the guard.
So, who’s behind this organization? Is Red John its master, or he is just using it and his members to get away with his murders?
Now, with two of the seven suspects dead, these are the ones still alive:
1 Bret Stiles
2 Gale Bertram
3 Ray Haffner
4 Reede Smith
5 Sheriff Thomas McAllister
