This week, New Girl is all about complicated relationships. Each of the four are dealing with their own significant other issues: Jess and Nick are coming down from their “all in” excitement, Schmidt is still juggling Elizabeth and Cece, and even Winston is angling for an exclusive with Daisy (Brenda Song), his casual girlfriend in Season Three.
Schmidt: Schmidt initially asks Cece to be his date to the upcoming office party, but gets caught out by his conniving co-worker Beth (Eva Amurri), who spills the beans about the office party to Elizabeth while Schmidt is giving a tour of his new office (a 3/4 size replica of Don Draper’s office, natch). Schmidt’s forced to cancel with Cece by telling her that he can’t bring “Sig-oths” to the party.
All seems well at the party with Elizabeth until Cece shows up after quitting a distressing modeling job. Meddlesome Beth tries her best to expose Schmidt, who somehow keeps his lie intact by a) convincing Elizabeth to role play as a coworker who has to leave the party early for a Hong Kong call and b) convincing Cece to pretend she’s a cater waitress. Schmidt convinces both girls that they’re actually running into each other under those “legit” circumstances. Beth sarcastically congratulates him: “You win. They both really love you.” By the look on his face, Schmidt probably feels more horrible than he does relieved.
Jess and Nick: Jess’s cutesy charm doesn’t work on the clique of fellow teachers who enjoy heavy drinking and making fun of the principal (who is definitely played by someone who was in Revenge of the Nerds). “Why are you talking to us?” they ask when Jess approaches them in her awkward manner. Nick considers it his duty as her “old man” to help Jess become popular, so he offers the teachers-in-question free office supplies and free drinks at the bar.
After observing Jess’s failing strategy, the former high-school cool kid and hackey sack entrepreneur Nick advises former Medieval-choir nerd Jess advice to drink more to be cool (“It’s the one thing I know to be true.”) Jess ends up becoming the life of the party, earns the nickname Old Toilet Pants after betting herself six dollars dance in a toilet bowl, and becomes an instant hit with the cliquey teachers.
