Episode two of Brooklyn Nine-Nine does another funny job in taking the odd couple cop partner trope and creating a fresh and humorous cast chemistry. The theme of this episode (and, I’m guessing everyone hereafter)? Convincing Jake to get his act together.
The episode opens with Captain Holt calling out Jake for his disorganization, holding up two pictures: “One is your locker, the other is a garbage dump in the Phillippines. Can you tell which is which?” (Trick question: they’re both of his locker). He’ll face some repercussions later.
Santiago, Diaz, and Boyle are assigned to a cocaine bust on Jay Street, while Jake is in charge of a minor vandalism case in which someone’s defacing squad cars with penises. Sergeant Jeffords offers his minivan as an undercover car (“SUVs roll!”); to Jake’s disappointment, Captain Holt decides to accompany him on the stakeout as a baby-sitter.
Gina brings in her friend Carlene, a dubious psychic, to give clarity to the drug bust. Santiago and Diaz laugh off Carlene’s vague predictions, but the gullible Boyle buys every word. Carlene advises him, “The woman you love, the scary one…doesn’t love you back. She will NEVER love you back.” (That’s obvious for now, but I’m a TV relationship psychic and have a feeling Diaz and Boyle will end up as an odd couple down the line.)
Jake, late to the stakeout, challenges Captain Holt on the baby-sitting, and Holt explains that he doesn’t want Jake’s behavior to ruin his impeccable record. Jake thinks only results matter, but the Captain tells him that he’ll have a superior officer with him on every case until he does every part of the job perfectly. Meanwhile, they bust the tagger as he’s tagging Sergeant Jeffords’ beloved van.
The vandal, “Banana Fartman, MD,” gives Jake a hard time during processing. My favorite line pops up when Jake challenges his claim to be 610 years old: “They’re going to try you as an adult Highlander, and they’re gonna cut your head off. Is that what you want?” The fingerprints database identifies the vandal as Trevor Podolski, the son of the Deputy Commissioner Podolski. Clearly bad news for the case.
