The False-Heads – Alternative Rockers from across the pond – bring their unparalleled brand of quirky mud-and-grime to the masses with ‘Tunnel Vision.’ The 5 track EP kicks off with ‘Fall Around’ (the dirty distortion and minimalistic structure bringing to mind early 90’s Grunge and Alternative). As soon as the vocals kick in over the heavy distortion, there is an interesting dynamic at work – the light, almost deadpan delivery of said vocals is in stark contrast to the heavy instrumentation that accompanies them – providing the listener with a multi-layered listening experience right out of the gate.
The second track ‘Without A Doubt’ builds upon the existing foundation of heavy guitars, thundering drums, and thumping bass, hand on the throttle, foot on the gas, and no intention of looking back. The intensity of this track easily surpasses that of it’s predecessor, an in-your-face affair that grips you by the throat and doesn’t let go until the last cymbal crashes.
The rest of the EP continues in this manner, remaining high intensity throughout. While this certainly has its appeal, there isn’t much in terms of melody or variation (the majority of both the instrumentation and vocals sound out of tune and key). One may be left to wonder if ‘Tunnel Vision’ was taken too literally during the songwriting process. Take a listen and let us know what you think.
