It’s another week and another episode of MTV’s Catfish. This week, we explore the relationship between Lauren and Derek. Right away I’m intrigued because the episode has a live aftershow afterwards. I’m hoping this one is gonna be good.
This week, we’re heading to Texas to meet Lauren. She met the love of her life, Derek, 8 years ago on Myspace. Oh, Myspace. She was 14 and he was 16. Throughout the relationship, Lauren has dated other people and has even been engaged before. On top of that, Lauren has a son and ended her engagement when Derek deleted her from Facebook. Gurl.
Derek, of course, refuses to video chat and Max’s face of exasperation keeps getting better as the minutes tick by. The guys seem to have their mind made up already and tell Lauren to brace herself for the inevitable. At this point, I’m hoping the guy is who he says he is. Or that his story is Mhissy levels of crazy.
The Search
The guys attempt to search for Derek with a reverse image search and come up with nothing. His Facebook seems legit as all his friends are from the same area or go to the same school. Maybe there’s hope after all?
Not so fast. They do a search for his phone number and discover the first bombshell of the night. The number belongs to an older man named LeVourne, or as Max puts it, “Someone with quite the physical difference.” He’s also married and has kids. What is alarming about his pictures is that he’s sitting on a Trike, something that “Derek” mentioned to Lauren earlier.
Despite this discovery, Lauren is still optimistic that Derek is who he says he is.
It’s time for Max and Nev to meet the parents. Lauren wants their help telling her parents the truth about Derek. Max looks like he’s having the time of his life. I think Max exists to be sassy, shatter dreams, and be a Silver Fox.
Her dad is the voice of reason but there’s no room for logic on this show.
The Meet Up
The gang head to Maryland and Lauren has invited her friend Ryan along. Was that in the budget? As they drive along, Max and Nev try to prepare Lauren for the worst and she accuses them of making her feel like shit. Nev pulls over as Lauren gets emotional. This isn’t just a TV show for her. It’s her life.
Lauren knocks on the door, unable to turn around and face who answers.
Shocker! Derek is real! They hug! Yay!
But who is the mystery man with the phone number?
They’re being lovey-dovey and Lauren has a Vulcan-like grip on this guy. Max and Nev almost look disappointed at the lack of a twist. I gotta say, now I almost wish LeVourne was real.
Day 2 and Nev wants to know how the date went. Max is more concerned about the size of Derek’s peen hands.
Derek meets Lauren’s son and the group goes to a petting zoo. Max gets bitten by an ostrich, perhaps karma for his dirty question.
The Flashforward
Lauren and Derek surprise Nev and Max by being together during the traditional 2-months-later-videochat. Since filming has ended, they have visited each other three times. Lauren is planning to move to Maryland to be with Derek. She’s hoping for a proposal within the year.
Who is LeVourne? The world may never know.
Bromantical Moments
- Nev and Max pee next to each other. True love.
- They stay together in the Sherlock suite and share some brownies
- Nev wakes up a shirtless Max
