Is the Lone Ranger the proof that Johnny Depp needs to stop working with Disney? According to the result of the Lone Ranger it seems that yes, maybe.
Announced as one of the blockbusters of this summer, the latest Disney movie seems to stumble at the box office. During its opening weekend, it just earned $29.4 million while in a week; it only earned $48.9 million in North America. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney could face a $150 million loss. Not a situation the studio had imagined as the Lone ranger was supposed to be one the latest high-profile movie of this summer.
These results are bad for Disney which spent more than $250 million on the movie and according to the Hollywood Reporter the studio spent another $175 million marketing the movie. This situation reminding last year’s John Carter big disaster.
It’s a big failure for the studio as the movie involves big talent names including Depp, Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer. The three of them are well-known for working together on the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. This time the trio seems to get tired and no longer appealing.
More than that, the Disney/Depp collaboration doesn’t appear as a good deal anymore. Indeed, last May, Dark Shadows only gained $79 million domestic and was saved by the overseas box-office ($166 million). And even if the latest Pirates of the Caribbean was a commercial success, it received mostly negative critics. This is not good news as a 5th installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean is due for 2015. Same could be said for Bruckheimer whose latest movies with Disney failed to be commercial and critical success.
“The Lone Ranger” is now one of the big-budget 2013 movies failing at box-office joining “After Earth” and “White House Down”. The question now is: who’s next?
