NYC-based singer-songwriter Emilia Cataldo is the creative mind behind Nehedar. A project with a slew of creative and musical influences, Nehedar has just finished production on their 6th independent album. “This Heart” was released June 11th, 2013 and features a pop sound infused with indie rock and jazz influences.
Review:
The album features a tracklist of 13 songs with lyrics that range from heartbreaking to quirky. “On Killing” is perhaps the most heartbreaking of the group with lyrics inspired by the experiences of a soldier in Afghanistan. The song starts off slow and builds with a lamenting sound that would make anyone stop and listen.
Our favorite track, however, would have to be the haunting “Bells of the City.” The vocals are definitely up a notch with this one and the result is a beautiful song.
Our favorite things about this album is the infusion of horns. A saxophone can be heard throughout the album that gives it a fresh and distinct sound. When Nehedar tours, she is sometimes accompanied by her father Luis Cataldo II who will join on her saxophone.
A music video featuring her 2012 release “Take it Apart” has already been released as a fun short film. You can view that here:
All in all, we think Nehedar is definitely something you should check out. The sound reminds us a bit of Regina Spektor so if you’re a fan of her you’ll love this. Nehedar has also been compared to PJ Harvey, Aimee Mann, and Tracy Bonham.
