Last week on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, NeNe made her triumphant return to Georgia, Porsha and Cynthia had a contentious lunch date, Apollo wrestled with the idea of divorcing Phaedra, and we officially met new housewife Claudia. Read on for our recap of RHoA 7×04.
RHoA 7×04 opens at the Kandi Factory, where all is not sugar and spice. On the contrary, Kandi feels her team is slacking, and – with new husband Todd to back her up – heads off to tell them they’re “not working cohesively.”
One person who might benefit from a team – even a non-cohesive one – is new housewife on the block Claudia, who’s late for her job co-hosting an early morning radio show because she’s “not a morning person.” In her personal interview, she admits to finding radio liberating because it doesn’t involve her being judged on her looks. Meanwhile, down the hall, freshly demoted housewife Porsha is reveling in her Dish Nation TV spot and claiming Claudia tried out for the job but got turned down. Claudia says she isn’t put off by the Porsha/Kenya drama and is “all about getting to know someone,” so she heads over to Porsha and is promptly ignored for her trouble. Ouch. As Claudia puts it, “Porsha must have heard that I’m hanging around town with Kenya, because the shade is evident.”
When days out turn to drama
Speaking of Kenya, she and Cynthia are meeting Claudia at one of the hot stores in town to help the new girl get to know Atlanta better. As the trio tries on shoes, the conversation turns to Porsha, and Claudia talks about how the new divorcee was friendly to her at first, then turned cold. Kenya encourages her to confront Porsha. Who else thinks that’s not going to end well?
Elsewhere, there’s another RHoA meetup, this one centered on Phaedra. Kandi organized a relaxing spa day to give Phaedra a break from the Apollo drama, but of course they end up discussing the subject anyway. NeNe and Porsha show up, as does some alcohol. This is about to get interesting. Kandi asks about Porsha’s disastrous meeting with Cynthia, and Porsha describes how Cynthia did the “robot read,” i.e. went down the list of things her husband told her to discuss. NeNe’s amused. Of course, she takes delight in anybody’s pot-shots at Cynthia these days, as their once rock-solid friendship is… well, on the rocks. She shocks the others by announcing that she and Cynthia will never be friends again, but claims she harbors no animosity toward the other woman “or her afro.”
Lying about lying?
The conversation turns to Kenya and from there to the Apollo-gy, of which NeNe doesn’t believe a word. “So you think he’s lying about lying?” asks a confused Kandi. Apparently so.
Remember those plans for a spa day away from the stresses and strains of everyday life? As Kandi describes it, “NeNe has swept into town and dropped this bomb, and now a relaxing spa day has become a conspiracy theory party.”
What does Phaedra think of it all? “Kenya will remain, at this time, where she has always been – at the bottom of my to-do list.” Zing. So while Kandi’s planning to say sorry to Kenya for taking Apollo’s side (“It’s wrong to have dissed this woman about this situation for two years, so I’m going to apologize”), it seems like she’s the only one.
Meanwhile, Peter and Apollo are on a bro date. Apollo says he feels Phaedra is abandoning him at his lowest point. He then proceeds to make an ill-advised joke about Kenya visiting him while he’s incarcerated. Awk… ward.
New in town
Remember that confrontation Claudia was planning? She and Porsha sit down at a restaurant and Claudia says she wants Porsha to get to know her and give her a chance. This is RHoA 7×04 – since when do these ladies give anyone a chance? Claudia must be new. She then attempts to broker a truce between Porsha and Kenya. …OK, she REALLY must be new.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Kandi and Todd tag-teaming the Kandi Factory posse led to some fallout. Specifically, Kandi’s right-hand man, Don Juan, is less than pleased with Todd’s involvement – or, to use his words, “I was here before he was here.” Uh-oh. Cut to Don Juan and Todd discussing the issue directly. Don Juan basically accuses Todd of planting ideas in Kandi’s head, Todd says something about Don Juan not being motivated to “run these cats” but having the potential to be “a dope-ass manager,” and the two eventually reach an uneasy detente.
Not cool
Meanwhile, the boss lady herself somewhat confusingly chooses kickboxing class as the right moment to apologize to Kenya. The apology itself is well-received, but the news of the lying-about-lying allegations? Not so much. Kenya leaves the suddenly otherwise empty room in tears, leaving Kandi to murmur, “I didn’t mean for this conversation to go there.” Cue Kenya having a meltdown in the bathroom and shutting the door behind her, forcing the camerapeople to get creative with shots of the closed bathroom door and hallways of the boxing gym. “I haven’t done anything to them to deserve what they did to me,” is Kenya’s final word on the topic. “It’s not cool,” Kandi concludes. Indeed.
Quote of the Week: “I’m happy to work with Todd as long as he gives me the respect I deserve and we put him on a step-stool so he can look at me in my eye.” – Don Juan
