If there’s one thing that can be said about The Fosters season 1, it’s that a lot happened. The season finale alone had more twists and turns than a NASCAR track, and if the sneak peeks of season 2 are anything to go by, we’ll be in for another wild ride.
One aspect that made The Fosters season 1 seem so realistic was the fact that the main characters didn’t exist in a vacuum. Their interactions with friends, relatives, classmates, housemates and colleagues enriched – and frequently complicated – the tapestries of their lives, and showrunners Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg weren’t afraid to show us how. That being said, the less central characters sometimes get overlooked and underappreciated, including the following:
Chase
We know what you’re thinking – this guy is a jerk. Be that as it may, Mariana’s involvement with him taught her some important lessons.
We first meet Chase, a handsome senior at Anchor Beach, when he recruits Mariana to join the school play. Mariana is so focused on Chase that she ignores Zac, who expresses interest in getting to know her. Mariana is initially upset after her costume partner, Kelsey, shoplifts a hat that’s perfect for Chase’s character, but after Chase reacts positively, she takes credit for picking it out.
Mariana again compromises her own principles for Chase at the cast party; she ditches Zac, takes advice from Talya and slips her panties into Chase’s front pocket. After she rebuffs Chase’s sexual advances, he tells everyone what happened and makes her the laughing stock of the school. Zac retaliates by trashing the play in a review for the school newspaper. His actions make Mariana realize he is much more worthy of her affections than Chase, which brings us to…
Zac
We picked Zac for the reasons outlined above, as well as for forgiving Mariana after she both ignored him and accidentally led him on. He even defers getting help for his ailing mother so he doesn’t have to move out of state, in part because he doesn’t want to leave Mariana.
Cole
Cole shoved Callie in the bathroom at Girls United and broke off her relationship with Brandon via text, so it’s understandable for fans of The Fosters to be wary about his inclusion in this list. Ultimately, though, Cole’s adverse reaction to the hormones he used Callie’s phone to obtain proved to be a catalyst for Callie. As a result, she handed over her secret cellphone to Rita and began to truly hold herself accountable for her actions. By the end of Callie’s time at the group home, Cole is proud to call her a friend.
Connor
Bouncing between numerous foster homes and seven different schools in his young life complicated Jude’s efforts to make friends – until Connor came along.
When some of the boys in Jude’s class tease him for wearing nail polish, Connor isn’t fazed. In fact, when he sits with Jude at lunch the next day, Jude notices he’s wearing matching nail polish. As their friendship develops, Connor continues to be kind to Jude:
- Connor asks Jude to be his partner for a science project.
- When Jude makes up an elaborate lie to disguise the fact that his father is in jail, Connor tells him he doesn’t need to lie to seem cool.
- Connor gives Jude his PSP after Jude has fun playing with it.
- After Jude and Connor fight over a girl, Connor shows up to Jude’s adoption anyway.
