The good news is, The Vampire Diaries is back! The bad news is that Damon’s still thirsting for vampire blood and there is no visible cure for his disease. Let’s hope Enzo can keep him under lock and key.
As a means to get by, Enzo and Damon have been making new vampires for him to feed off of. As it stands, he can last 8 hours between feedings. Not too bad, right? That’s your average three meals a day. Regardless, Enzo promises he’s not going to leave him out to dry. Honestly, how could anyone hate him? He’s like a loyal little pitbull!
Katherine’s starting to slip up. During their “study” session, she almost outs herself with her extensive 700 years of historical knowledge that doesn’t quite match the barely legal doppleganger body she’s inhabiting. Luckily, Cockblock Caroline is back to spoil the fun and inform Stefan that Damon is, indeed, “off the rails”. It gives Katherine the perfect opportunity to weasel her way into a road trip with Stefan to go and rescue Damon. On the flip side, Caroline is off to spend time with her own ex after Tyler calls her, concerned for Matt’s well being after not turning up for two days. But not before warning Stefan to be careful with seemingly emotionally unstable Elena. Oh if she only knew… Katherine quickly calls her daughter to update her on her Stefan-snagging-status and to inquire about the Matt situation. See, Katherine’s perfectly fine with killing off the quarterback to keep her identity secret. Nadia…not so much.
Just as Enzo and Damon are making to leave the house of their latest victim, Dr. Wes and his merry men – I MEAN Travelers show up to magically trap the two inside with a single test:
Wes: “Now that you’re trapped with only one source of food, how long can you go until you feed on your best friend?”
When they’re stopped for gas, Katherine’s compulsive need to win over Stefan urges her to take more drastic measures than her cutesy lovesick teen act. While he’s making snack run, she quickly rips one of the pipes out of Stefan’s car to prolong their journey. And it works. So much so that she convinces him to just get a hotel room so they can “shower while they’re waiting for the car”. Katherine…your true self is showing.
The awkward silence is massive with Tyler and Caroline but luckily it’s broken shortly when Matt walks in, Nadia just behind him. The pair try to play off a weekend in Atlantic City spent “kanoodling” and Tyler buys it. But Caroline is still skeptical. But I guess the joke’s on her…
Caroline: “You’re not seriously buying all this?”
Tyler: “Hell of a lot easier to buy than other things that have happened.”
Ouch. Low blow, Ty. Meanwhile at the hotel, things are going according to Katherine’s plan. Stefan confesses what it’s like to be in love with her [Elena] and how he can relate to what Damon’s going through. It only confirms that his love for Elena is still there and she can manipulate that to work in her favor. Maybe enough to even get him to kill his own brother?! And later, things start getting steamy. Katherine finishes her shower in time for Stefan to let her know the care is done. She leaves the door open a crack, pretending to unintentionally give him a show while she gets dressed. With the sexual tension levels raised, it doesn’t take long before they’re locked in a heated kiss. But Stefan breaks away, knowing it’s wrong. He heads out to pay the bill while Katherine basks in the afterglow of their moment.
Enzo starts to take some drastic measures of his own with Damon. He chains Damon to a chair to prevent him from feeding on him. It also allows Enzo to call Stefan for help but it’s Katherine who answers. He discloses their location and their current situation and Katherine instructs him to text her phone with the address. But of course she won’t be telling Stefan any time soon.
To make matters worse, Wes and his Travelers show up to shoot Enzo in the shoulder to make him bleed. The scent alone provokes Damon to break free from his bonds and attack his friend. He stops just before he can drain Enzo, choking and sputtering up his blood. Wes reveals he had the Travelers raise the acidity of Enzo’s blood which essentially makes it taste like hydrochloric acid. Wes says he has one more test for Enzo and then he’ll let him go for good. He refuses to leave until Damon insists.
After Katherine calls to report her progress with Stefan, Nadia and “Matty Blue Eyes” chat about their distant moms. Matt tries to reason with her that she did all this to keep her mom alive but Katherine seems less than interested in her. Nadia’s no idiot, she knows he’d say anything to save Elena. In the end, she tastes his blood to check if he’s vervain free, and he is. He manages to play to her weakness for him and before they know it, they’re making out on the table. Matt sneaks a half text to Caroline before she catches him and compels him to forget everything. On her way out, Caroline and Tyler are there to stop her but she gets away.
Katherine and Stefan finally make their way to Damon. He warns them to stay back but they’re not afraid, and to prove it, Katherine (posing as Elena) walks into the house and cuts her hand, showing him her blood in a “you’re stronger than this, see?” display. Of course it doesn’t really work that way and he starts drinking her viciously. Stefan tries to get him off, not catching Katherine trying to kick a stake his way, and lures him away by cutting his own palm and snapping his brother’s neck when he takes the bait. They get him back to the boarding house where Stefan locks him in the cellar. Damon’s convinced Elena thinks he’s a lost cause, informing Stefan about the stake kick that he missed.
Upstairs, Caroline is drinking to her failed ‘make nice with my ex’ mission with Tyler…
Tyler: “How evolved do you think I am? You slept with Klaus. You slept with the guy that killed my mom. What’s a fair amount of time for me to get past that? A week? A month? Tell me, what sounds right to you?”
Caroline: “Okay, you made your point.”
Tyler: “I’m not trying to be a dick But the idea of us being ‘good’? It’s not gonna happen.”
Stefan joins her for a drink and they mull over recent events – Matt’s compulsion, Elena’s odd behavior, Damon’s assumption that Elena is so over him she wanted Stefan to kill him, and of course the text that Matt tried to send Caroline: “Help K.” It doesn’t take Stefan long to figure out the K meant Katherine. But all these shocking-not-shocking conclusions being drawn by Stefan and Caroline are starting to get played out. The revelation that was shocking? Nadia was bitten by Tyler. And we all know Klaus isn’t about to run back to Mystic Falls anytime soon. So will there be a new cure for werewolf bites? Or are we saying goodbye to Nadia Petrova next week? Stay tuned!
